I have a Nikon D100 with a 28-200mm lens, my friends have asked me to take some photos of their baby (due Early Sept) and a few of the bump before hand.

I like taking photos and want to take some nice ones, just wondering what other equipment I will need to take a few photos.

They live in a old cottage so natural light is limited due to small windows, so the baby ones will probably be taken indoors, what do I do about lighting, flash, or flash gun etc.

So any tips ideas will be most welcomed.

Hi Amanda and welcome to TP - we're a friendly bunch (well most of us are)

The one accessory you will need (and not just for the photos of your friends' baby) is a flash gun (aka speedlight) to mount on the camera hot shoe. The pop-up flash on almost any camera is too harsh which creates really dark shadows and over-exposed skin tones. It also promotes red-eye due to its proximity to the lens centre-line. Nikon make some great speedlights but there are alternatives from other manufacturers too - just as good performance and mucho less costo

I'm sure someone more familiar with the D100 will come along and recommend one.

Hi Amanda - welcome to TP.

I agree with Steve about the flash gun, but if all else fails you can take a little of the burn out of the on board flash by covering it in a piece cut from a plastic milk bottle or at a push, a tissue.

Position the cot near the window, south facing if poss,if nett curtain up it will difuse the lighting to a degree, if not some tracing paper taped to windows,
tweek the iso to 400 use a tripod ,take pics when baby tired and just waking.
Good luck.
