Ive got a 400mm 5.6L And im just wondering what would be the best filter to get on it for bird photography?

Thanks

I'm not sure that you need any filter... What affect are you looking to achieve?

If you want to photograph BIF then I would say no filter is best, so as you can allow the maximum amount of light, thereby helping to allow fast shutter speeds.

I would say no filter - I certainly never used one on my 400mm L and my current tele doesn't have one either.

I've never used a filter yet, as others have said a uv filter if you really want a filter on the camera although personally prefer just the hood.

Another filter to consider might be a polarising filter. This can intensify blue skies, but at a cost of 2 stops. If the bird is near water it might also help reduce unwanted reflections

Okay guys, thanks for the replies, looks like I get no filter :)

All the best

Nick
