What first lens for a D700?

Yes
I am itching to push the go button on a D700 on this forum - never used FF and I would be grateful for any guidance on lenses, especially the first that I would need to go with it.

On the D300 I liked the 17-55 and am not really interested in huge zooms. I do not generally use the camera indoors, do enjoy holidays so a walk around lens is important to me.

What thoughts?

Chris

The only one that springs to mind for your D700 is the nikon 24-70 2.8 @ nearly £1150 it aint cheap but will last you .

How about the Sigma equivalent (closer to £200 used)? Or Tamron do a good lens in that range too but I can't for the life of me remember what it is!

You are probably like me and don't like huge zooms either - in that, I'd say look no further than the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Di and the Tamron 17-35 f/2.8 - f/4 for wide angle.

You should be able to find both used for under £400 for the pair, and they are both top notch.

The Nikkor 28-105 is also excellent. Ditto the Tamron 24-135 but these are very hard find.

Assuming you want f/2.8, I'd go for the Tamron 28-75 (older version without a motor) - I think last time we met I was touting a D700 + 28-75 f/2.8...?

50mm 1.4 AF-S and the 105 Macro AF-S are both more than capable of great pics - just depends on what you want to take!

the 17-35 Tamron is also a corker.

...can I borrow the 700 + 28-75 for a few months to see if I like them? Please?

If I remember correctly, you also told me that I'd buy another DSLR.

You a real prophet? Must be the beard?

Chris

Whats the Tamron like with lens flare? I have the Sigma 24-70mm and it really sucks if you happen to be shooting into sunlight

I also have a Sigma 24-70 and don't have a real problem with flare. Yes, if you ley direct sunlight hit the front element, it can be a problem but you can see it before hitting the shutter release so can provide a little extra shade with a hand, sheet of card (French flag) or the like.

If you prefer primes, here's another vote for a 50mm but in my case, I'll recommend the f/1.8 since the high ISO performance of the D700 more than compensates for the extra 1/2 stop that the f/1.4 gives you and there's no need for an HSM lens on the D700 either.

I think I would want the 24-70 and therefore have ruled myself out of buying a cheap, close by secondhand D700.....I am just off to have a cry.

Thanks for the replies.

I have the predecessor of that lens the 35-70 f2.8D, and it is a little cracker, seen them for around £300 used, it is just waiting for me to get a D700 for it.

Great value, have a look at some pbase images LINK

...the D700 has now gone to its new home.

I have had a couple of the 50s and never really understood why everyone goes on about them - I think I want a short twist rather than a prime - but thanks for the advice anyway.

Chris

for me the main reason for going FF is was the improved high-ISO performance, so it would then make sense to get a really fast prime - 50mm 1.4 works well here.

if you really want a midrange zoom, then any of the 'older' nikon's should work just fine - until you save up for the 24-70mm. In particular, the 35-70mm 2.8 is nice, if you can stand the 'push-pull' zooming action.

I bought the D700 about 3 months ago and since then bought the AFS 50mm f/1.4 and the AFS 24-70 f/2.8. They are both seriously good lenses on the D700. The 24-70 is more flexible BUT is is about 4 times more expensive.

... and how many times more heavy?

I must admit i when I got the 24-70 bundled with my d700, I initially thought i'd sell it... but after a few day's shooting, just found that too hard :bonk:

great lenses, both of them...

Nikon D700 + 24-70mm = YUMMY!

Well you are welcome to have a play with the D700 if you are in the area.

Don't have a Tamron 28-75 any longer in Nikon fit but I now use one on my Sony A900 instead which should give you an idea.
