I used to think Fine art photographs would be a photo that hints about the scene rather than takes a photo of a scene, maybe a little abstract but looking around the internet it seems any image can be described as "fine art"

What do you interpret as Fine art? What isn't fine art?

A gallery owner I know suggested that fine art was ordinary art with a 40% increase on the price tag!

Steve.

Seems about right Steve!!

Alex - does that mean that in a lanscape image, if you are trying to convey an emotion that image is therefore not fine art?

fine art
antiques and fine items of beauty and artistic value other than just the result on the back side of your lens

just to add to the discussion : what about recording an image, which goes beyond the image and conveys a deep emotion, meaning, or statement ( political). Specifically thinking of the Napalm girl, or the Red Flag on German Headquarters, or the Flag of Iwo Jima. :)

And what about when the photograph is actually staged, but replicates an actual event that happened the day before ( Flag of Iwo Jima).:)
I think these distinctions are artificial - in any case beauty is in the eye of beholder; and so is art.

William Eggleston is widely regarded as one of the first modern fine art colour photographers. You should check out his work.

"Fine art" porn is erotica. Erotica produced by someone with an art degree is artistic. Beatifully lit, posed and printed artistic erotica can be classed as fine art. Helps if the artist is dead as well.
