i take photos, and alot of the time i dont know what im doing and ive noticed my it matters if files are saved in RAW, what exactly does this mean?

also can you make HDR shots with any camera aslong as you change the exposures accordingly? do cameras come with settings that do this automatically?

thanks in advance

A RAW file is the equivalent to your cameras negative, it is literally the raw data that your camera sees with no editing at all, the image you see on the screen will be the jpg result of the processing you have told the camera to do ie white balance etc.

By shooting in RAW you give yourself a better chance of recovering a shot that was nearly right in editing s/w such as DPP or Photoshop.

For HDR shots if the 400D is the same as the 500D you can use the wheel to take some bracketed shots where the camera will automatically take 3 shots, one at the preset exposure, one under and one over, these will of course need to be pulled together in some software on the computer...

does my camera store in RAW automatically or am i required to do so

ah ok, right, im not sure how i can take bracketed shots with my camera, ive googled the process but i cant seem to get it to work, what settings do i need to use

im still getting there when it comes to fully understanding my camera, im getting on okwith some aspects, some photos are turning out good, and not just by luck, but other things just baffle me. all part of the learnign process i guess

If the display is the same on the 400D on the back menu screen hit the set button and move the highlighted area to where it says raw, select and you can change between RAW and the various JPG settings.

For bracketing shots (assuming the same as 500D) highlight the line with -2---0---+2 and again select but instead of moving left and right with the left and right buttons use the wheel.

I am trying to do this from memory which at this time of morning is not the best so hopefully they're right

ok, i follow you for the most part, all that seems to be correct, apart from the 3 automatic shots, doesnt seem to do that for me, maybe thats a difference between the 2 cameras.

ive just finished a nightshift and my head is mince, so it could also just be that

thanks for your help

Andy, you ask whether any cameras have an auto-HDR setting: the Pentax K-7 and K-x do and no doubt others will follow.

With Pentax, the mirror stays flipped up for the three exposures, and the combined shot is saved as a JPEG. There are two strengths of HDR and I've read users saying that they prefer the in-camera results to what they can get with five exposures and the Photomatix software.
