I thought I would start this thread for those of us not familiar with certain terms,so I will start with what is 'cross processing' when its about?

It's what happens when you work on your pictures when you're in a bad mood :)

As far as I'm aware it's something to do with developing films... One thing you can do is put a slide film through the normal colour negative process. (E-6 is the usual slide processing chemicals, C-41 is for colour negatives) Not sure exactly what this achieves, though!

(can't think of any 'what is?' questions right now, I'll pass my turn to someone else!)

Or. It's something that was done in the old days when one used the wrong chemicals to process film or transparencies etc with the result that colours and contrast were all wrong but some people liked the effect.

You can duplicate the effect in Photoshop.

Traditionally, cross processing colour slide film in C-41 process chemicals is most common. Some commercial-level photography/darkroom merchants will perform this developing process. However, cross processing can take place in many other forms, such as negative colour print film and/or positive colour reversal film in a black and white developer.

Other interesting effects can be obtained by bleaching colour films processed in black and white chemistry using an hydrochloric acid dichromate mixture or using potassium triiodide (KI3) solution. If these bleached films are then re-exposed to light and re-processed in their intended color chemistry, subtle, relatively low contrast, pastel effects are obtained[citation needed].

Colour cross processed photographs are often characterized by unnatural colours and high contrast. The results of cross processing differ from case to case, as the results are determined by many factors such as the make and type of the film used, the amount of light exposed onto the film and the chemical used to develop the film.

In short, making your photos a funny color.
