What macro lens?

Yes
After getting my 5DmkII I gave my Canon 400D to my mum who has been playing around doing a bit of photography.
Yesterday she said

"I'd like to get a decent macro lens something decent like the Sigma Macro 105mm f/2.8 EX DG, it looks like a fast lens with a wide aperture, what do i think?"

Well after the initial being impressed that she knows what to look for I thought i'd ask people on here. She wants a real macro lens, something with a bit of range but cheekily I want to use it on the FF 5Dmk2 as well as the 400D hehe

Any suggestions?

Maybe the next focal range up to the 105? The Sigma 150mm 2.8 is a very good choice.
If you require a larger working distance than 38cm than maybe consider the Sigma 180 3.5 with it's 46cm minimum focus distance.

I just got the sigma 105 and I am very pleased with my results so far. Wasn't a purchase I intended this year but Jessops are clearing these out and have reduced it to £249 (collect at store only) If you are lucky like me you can still pick up a boxed one at a local store.
I cannot say that this will be the best choice for you as I really don't know enough yet. But I do know it's a good price for it.

I realkly doubt there are any left in jessops, when did you get yours?

24th August. Might still be worth a couple of calls, I presume there online reservation system cuts off when stock is down to one or two to allow for stock discrepancies or returns. You might even get a display model half price :shake:

I've had the 400D, and still have the Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro. I'd definitely recommend it.

Its a very good lens, a bit noisy, but I've included a photo taken with above equipment. Its the only lens I've ever had (apart from my L) that I haven't ever considered upgrading, because it really gives fab results.

I have the Canon 100mm macro and really do rate this lens. I have to say though that I have learnt that a macro lens on it's own gave me fairly indifferent results - It wasn't until I got a flash that the lens came into it's own.

Slightly shorter reach, but the 50mm Sigma Macro is a cracker and a bit lighter as well, worth a thought - my daughter finds it a perfect weight, also doubles up as a good 50mm prime lens,

no joy, how does the 100mm canon lens rate?

Sorry if i raised your hopes for that one then. Another option would be phoning a store and asking for delivery.
I'm sure foodpoison mentioned in another thread that they would do this. If so Sauchiehall street Glasgow are showing as having stock.

i would go for the sigma 180 f3.5 cracking lens and gives you that little bit more working distance aswell as a better background ( Bokeh ). some examples on my flickr

just been looking for the current prices of this lens and i cant belive the price of it now £250 more than i paid last year wow
