Did you see the documentary he did about his favourite guitars? That's worth a watch.
 
Slightly connected, I once learned to play the guitar parts for Every Breath You Take, which requires some careful stretching, only to have a keyboard playing friend knock it out effortlessly complete with correct damped-string tone. At that point I decided life was too short to learn difficult guitar parts I didn't actually like.
 
The 'whiney guitar' is called a pedal steel guitar.

I love the sound of it in Walk of Life and the solo at the end is truly remarkable.
