That will depend on what you want to do and what you have already.

at the moment i have a 450d with 2 kit lenses 18-55is and 55-250is,i want to bo some low light stuff inside with the 50,and i like some of the strobe work i have seen on other sites hence the 580.but i cant decide what one first or should i get the not so good option of the 430 and the 1.8

i would go for the 430 and 50mm f1.8, of course it is a comprise but you get two toys to play with and if your not happy with the products then you can sell them one and lose out on a few quid but at least you have tried it out. i have a minolta 50mm f1.7 and flashgun and i wouldnt want one or the other, i would go for comprimise and i am now going for a sony hvl f42am when i can afford one.

go for comprise.

Jim,

Don't discount the 550EX....the one superceded by the 580EX. You should be able to find a good secondhand unit for £135-150 and it'll have additional functionality to the 430EX.....may leave you enough for a good secondhand 50/1.4 and both requirements satisfied at the same time.

Then I would go for the 430 and 50 1.8 (not discounted used kit either). See how you get on.

The main advantage of the 580 flash is the master controller facility which you only need if you are using multiple units. It also has more power but you can usually get around that.

The thing about both 50mm lenses is their low f/number, obviously, for shallow depth of field and low light photography, in which case the f/1.8 lens is close to f/1.4 and a lot less money. It's also a much more cheaply made lens, but they are very popular and you could easily sell it on and either upgrade to the f/1.4, or go for a wider lens which might be more useful, eg 30mm f/1.4 or similar, or alternatively something like 85mm f/1.8. 50mm is an old heritage lens from film cameras and, IMHO, not that useful on a crop camera.

In the future, if you get a 580 master unit you can use that to control the 430 remotely and have all sorts of strobist fun :)

I think that the 430 EXII is a good flash - Certainly cheaper and may help you to afford both! Sorry, but I am totally unable to demonstrate any type of restraint!
