I have a scenario. I have the Nikon D5000 which is brilliant with the 18-55 VR lens and again, I like it.

I need a longer reach lens but finances are very tight.

Do i go for .............

Tamron AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 Nikon+Motor £118 with 3 years warranty from Amazon and forfeit and vibration control?

or

Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro For Nikon Digital & Film Cameras
by Sigma .........at £177 odd UK and again forfeit any VR control?

or finally..............each rubbish for a month and get

Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX NIKKOR at £229 from Jacobs?

I don't have enough for the 70-300VR so must choose between the 3 above.

I do have tripods and also purchased a bean bag from TP in the classifieds and that would help with the vibration control issue.

That's my dilemma .............. :help:

Any comments and suggestions would be beneficial and fun to see personal comments on all 3 lenses.

It would make most sense in my opinion to get the Nikon 55-300VR. I've not used one myself but the VR is invaluable.....you wont always have the camera on the tripod when you need it to be. There are some shots taken with it on here somewhere and they look to be pretty decent.
The focussing will likely be quicker than either of the other two as well....trust me on this its a right royal pain when you lens hunts for a couple of seconds and the shots gone!
Its a shame you cant stretch to the the 70-300VR because that really is a stellar lens....have a look on ebay for a used one; its where i got mine from and the price seems to have dropped a bit since I paid £300 for mine....maybe lucky at around the £260 mark?
I'm not saying that the other two lenses are no good, because they are both decent enough....but I would go with the Nikon personally.

Grateful for the thoughts and feedback. I will have look on the bay but am not really confident about buying any lenses on the bay.

I will keep looking though.

I have the Tamron AF 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di LD Macro and its decent enough but you need GOOD light to use it and either a tripod or a fast enough shutter speed. But the macro function is good to use and a bit of fun to mess with

As a rule your shutter speed should match your focal length (or greater) to get shots that are not blurred. If I was buying again I would save your money and get the Nikon Nikon 55-300VR. I SO miss VR when I use the Tamron

Just missed this one on ebay for £180 from the UK and the seller has 100% feedback

Two Nikon 70-300VR's sold on here recently for £260 each.....be patient and you'll find one. They do come up fairly frequently. Ebay is not so bad for lenses; I bought both of mine through them and had no problems. Just remeber that most DSLR owners tend to look after their kit well. Double check the feedback scores too jusrt to be sure.
