Ive been asked to do some portraits by a friends friend, they want me to go to their place a take some portraits of there little girl in the garden, then get them printed and framed for them, but i stumped at what to charge, any of you guys had any dealing like this, and any idea of what to charge?

Thanks Andy

Are you makeing a liveing out of photography? If yes then charge your normal rate for portrait sesions and framed prints.

If not then I would look to cover the costs plus a bit extra for your time and effort based on it being someone you don't know. I usually find that makeing people aware the cost of doing things they are usually very happy to hand over £20-£40 if they are happy with what you have produced.

If it was someone you know then I would look to cover the costs and do it as a freind. But I have a problem chargeing freinds and family for anything. You often find they will try to hand over £20 as well.

I agree friends i do not charge, i did a shoot of a friends 8 month old boy and printed some shots for them and didnt charge a thing as i feel its the right thing to do, but on this ocassion i dont know who the people are and feel i should charge a little for the time and effort put in. Whats the going rate for an a4 framed shot nowadays.......

As long as you make sure you cover all your costs, then maybe £50-£75 per hour on top of that? 2-hr minimum charge regardless of time spent on task.
That might sound a lot to some, but that way you cover your time spent doing the other stuff too, like travelling, shopping for the bits and pieces and sitting down and framing them.

And just because they're friends (which in this case it would seem they're not), why should they not pay something? Unless you've offered to do it as a present for a special occasion...they approached you, so they pay.
