Probably a Sigma 50-500mm OS for your D200...

thats sounds good but the wife has me D200 now lol . I'am with out a camera now :-(

I'd think about the Sigma 150-500, good reach for wildlife an awesome OS system, then spend the rest on the best body you can get with the money. Careful shopping may get you a Canon 40D or perhaps a 50D

I have a Sigma 150-500, too, and I'm inclined to agree.

thanks for that lads i will give them a good looking at ..

a 300 prime is really to short for a lot of wildlife. You can always add a 1.4x converter. But then you're going to struggle to get all that and a body for sub £1000. I'm not sure you could even get a 300/4 and a reasonably recent body for sub £1000.

I've got a 40D and a 100-400, which is nice (good zoom range, definitely a bit sharper than the sigma's (though there isn't that much in it), but probably a bit out of your budget.

I'd recommend staying with nikon if that's what your wife now has. Then you can share lenses. Or maybe that's a downside if your wife end up liking your new wildlife lens :thumbs:

I would save up another £1000 and get a 7D with 300 f4 or 400 f5.6.

On your budget a siggy 150-500 with a 50D would be great (one would have to be 2nd hand!) and you may get it for much less if you get both second hand. you won't get much for £1000 new on camera and lens.

If the wife has a Nikon then stick to Nikon, you can share lenses.

So.. to the nitty gritty.. D90 + The longest lens you can get, though for your budget it will be a toss up between something like the Sigma's or an older manual focus 400mm F5.6

Or get a Sigma 100-300 f4 EX HSM DG + a TC - A recommended wildlife lens (had one an  it)

Yep but he did say the camera is the wifes and he needs his own.

They go for around £500'ish so £500 on a body shouldn't be that much of a problem.. Hopefully

Then again I'm on about a Nikon version & not Canon.... If there's much difference in price..

If you'e only going to have one lens, I can't see the point in confining yourself to fixed length - sod's law says it's always to going to be too long or too short....

Does it have to be a digital set up? How about an older, MF body and reasonably fast long MF lens? Still not chgeap as chips but a lot less expensive than a DSLR and suitable lens. (MF on a digital body is possible, yes but not as easy as it is with a body designed for it).

Sigma 150-500 not sharp eh?

You may have to stop it down a little to get it sharp at 500mm, but with decent light it will work well beyond it's price.

with a bit of shopping around you might just get a 20D and a 100-400L, then stick an extender on your letter to santa.

Failing that 20D and 300 prime, MPB had a 300 prime for £800 the other day, 20D bodies vary from £130-£200.
