What to rent for an airshow...

I'm thinking of hitting up the RAF Leuchars air show next month for some pics.

I've got the ground stuff covered, okay a UWA might be nice but the trusty 24-70 will do.

Now, the last show I attended in Perth in 2010 I had the 5D and 70-200 and there was a lot of cropping required in PP. So I know I'm going to need to rent something. :nuts:

So, do I go and get the 300 f/4 or 80-400 f/4.5-5.6 VR to give me some flexibility.

Heck, I could go all out and get the 200-400 f/4 VR II but it's almost £100 more. :eek:


I'd go for the the 300 if I knew I needed fast(ish) glass but with prop'd planes I know I'll be running 1/250th at the most to capture the movement and for jets well, I could run f/5.6 and just push the ISO if required right?

The weight of the 200-400 is also a major concern which is why I'm not really considering it!


So opinions please! :thumbs:


EDIT: I could add the 1.4x TC to the 300mm for a bit more flexibility for not much more. I'm swaying towards the prime and TC combo at the moment if I'm honest.

Get the 300 and a TC.
I used this combo at RIAT last year and it performed really well.

Of course the 200-400 would be the daddy, but it's a lot to carry around and a lot of money just for a day.
 
I have hired the 300mm twice and been blown away by how good it is. Not that heavy either and very sharp. Quick AF too.

Thanks for the advice, the 80-400 has been dropped!

I've thrown a bit of a curve ball into the mix now though with the Sigma 100-300 f/4 (obviously I can get the 1.4x TC for this too). Just need to see if I can win it on our favourite auction site... :)
 
For the RAF Waddington airshow this year I had a 5D3 with a Sigma 150-500 OS and a 60D with a Sigma 120-400 OS and also had a Canon 24-105 f4 for the ground display and came back with a good load of great photos. I shot with spot metering and used exposure comp to get the detail I wanted.

The more I read up on the 100-300 f/4 the more I want it now! I think with the 1.4x T\C giving me around 420mm @ f/5.6 with hardly any compromise in quality or AF (only £16 to rent it for the 3 days anyway).

Just need to see how the auction goes now...
 
not familiar with those lenses but TCs are compatible with everything
you probs know the ins and outs of those options
I had a 70-300 and had fun at an airshow, but this year with a 70-200 and 2xTC it was just that bit easier.
some serious kit to carry around though for me, monopod helped

I'll hire the 1.4x t/c and see how I like it, supposedly it is a great combo with this lens so I can see me buying one...

Regarding the weight, I will be ordering a monopod. 1.44kg lens + 1.2kg D3s = killer!!! :lol:

Kev Shore has a 1.4 for sale in the nikon classified :)
 
Not 100% sure if the Nikkor 1.4x would be compatible - but thanks for the heads up.

I can get the siggy version which I know will work for around 150 on eBay I'd just go for that though. However, I've got some other things to buy next month (new shoes, suits etc) so will be renting it this time anyway.
 
How much did the lens set you back if u don't mind me asking, if funds allow by next spring it will be one of these or an older 300mm Nikon f4
