Ok am off to Barbados in under 2 weeks, which is my first beach holiday in 10 years. It's going to be very hot so i don't want to be carrying round lots of kit so what do i take?

For definite the ND grads, the CP filter, lens hoods as much memory as i can get my hands on, both cameras G9 and 350d, tripod and the lens pen.

so shall i bother with the flash? and what lenses shall i take?

I have at my disposal

nifty fifty
100 2.8 macro
24-105 f4 L
10-22 EF-S
75-300

Mostly i take landscape pictures and still life / close up

But sometimes i wonder if removing a lens or 2 will make much difference to the kit bag.

please help.

dont take flash, you have a flash on your camera (i hope) and if you set it to Fill In Flash you can get some effective images without it being really bulky and without losing detail

take which ever TWO zooms you use the most often, and your marcro if you think you will need it

remember to take a neutralising filter. it will help alot x

I've just got back from a sunny holiday and at the last minute i ditched the DSLR, left it at home and just took the go-anywhere compact (Oly 1030SW).

Best decision i made as it meant i could just relax into the holiday and not worry about my kit etc.

It depend on what you want from your holiday? Are you going with the intention of taking pictures or to have fun and relax and not worry?

well a bit of both - my partner has just brought an SLR and although i want to do some proper togging i don't intend to do it every day hence the G9 as well. I just don't want to carry lots of kit i wont use.

On my recent travels Ruth I took a wide, a 24-70 walkabout, and a 70-200

Without doubt the wide and the 70-200 spent most time on the camera but thats just me :)

A took a flash and used it on and off but would question the need really!

And there's always space for a 50mm :)

10-22, 24-105 for every day walk about. Take the 50mm as its tiny. Any reason why you're taking the g9 too?

thanks for the help guys i think Pete has the right idea :D

am taking the G9 to put in my pocket when were out and about with out the cameras, don't want to miss anything - its light and easy to carry about.

Cool. I know a lot of people worry that they'll leave something behind so they take as much as possible. Just wanted to check that you were taking the g9 for the right reasons :)

that's so me carry all the kit about all the time and hardly use any of it. i really need to get in the habit of taking what i need. - get a smaller bag maybe the answer

Maybe, but I'd say its better to know what you're going out to shoot in the first place.

i totally agree and i think thats where i go wrong, i pick a location not a type of photography, take everything and see what i find, some times it works sometimes it doesn't. drives me insane though and now m back is giving me jip i really have to think up a new method.

i'm off to the caribbean in a fortnight too. After much deliberation i have decided to take most of my kit
450d
100-400L
10-20
18-35
siggy 105
tripod
ndf's
little fuji and underwater case

i have not had a dslr on holiday before so do not want to miss out on some decent light for a change
i have planned out all the days for the fortnight, split into holiday days and togging days.
we are on barbados the 4th and 5th, i will be the one with the funny hat laden with kit

enjoy your holiday

i nearly chocked on my cake reading that - will miss you though i think we arrive just after that.

Although i will be int eh bright pink tankini with an slr :D

just an update in case anyone is planning a trip to Bardados in the near future.

1 as 2 of there major attractions are in caves - take a flash it will come it handy for fill light.

2 Macro lens will be useful as there are a lot of formal gardens and stuff. (lucky Martyn had borrowed mine and had it in his camera bag when we arrived:))

3 if you like wildlife pics something in the region of 200-300mm will be useful.
