THe older Nikkor lenses have this little piece of metal plate with a slot in it sitting just above the apeture ring, please remind me ," What was that for "? thanks Bob W
On some of the older cameras: Nikkormat, F, F2 etc. there was a pin that stuck out from the camera below the pentaprism that locked into the slot in the metal plate 'thingy' on the lens - this was how the lens aperture was communicated to the camera body - we're talking pre-1970's here... Since Nikon's philosophy was that all lenses would always fit all cameras, they kept this feature on all M/F lenses for many years...
The silver 'rabbit'-ears thing isn't part of the AI linkage - it's pre-AI - the AI tab is on the aperture ring and interfaced with a rotating ring around the body's lens-mount.
Nikon F2 - the rabbit's ears are linked to a metal pin under the Photomic Pentaprism head just out of sight... lenses such as this are known as Non-AI since the introduction of AI lenses in the late '70's...
