Yes
I'm looking for a zoom lens for my D60 Ive been looking at the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG but then Ive just read what it says about the Nikon 55-200mm f/4.-5.6 AFS DX VR Lens it says the 55-200mm zoom range is equivalent to an 82.5-300mm lens in 35mm format.

so would the Nikon be the same zoom as the sigma any help and views of these or other zoom lens to get for around the £200 mark would be great thanks

the 55-200 vr is a great lens , i have one on my D60

someone is selling one on here for the right money as well !

I've got the Sigma and had the Nikon. Depending on whether you really need the extra 100mm on the Sigma I would say that the Nikon produces sharper images and the VR (Vibration Reduction) makes it a lot easier to use at 200mm as it really reduces camera shake. he Sigma (I think) will not autofocus on your D60, the Nikon will.

Hope this is a help

Andy

The 55-200 VR is an AWESOME lens, It all depends on what you are shooting, i have had amazing pictures from the lens. And also you have your numbers in a twist here, as it is a DX format lens, it is already set to show you 55-200 whereas the sigma is an FX format lens so the crop factor is on that lens so really it is a 105-450mm lens, very useful, for things far away, but not so useful for anything close up! Also, both lenses suffer from a long close focus with the 55-200 being 1.1m and im not so sure about the 70-300, but im sure it is close to 1.3m!

Ive got the sigma for my D40, its sharp and does auto focus.
It appears earlier models don't have motors but newer ones do.
It has built in motor drive wrote on box.

Yep that's what I've just ordered for me d40 (55-200 vr). There is one or £120 on the forum, may accept a little less. I just picked up a new one for £135.

Do the D60 not have a 1.5 crop? it not a full frame is it?

Whats that got to do with it?

I have a Sony A900 and a Nikon D50.

One is full frame - one is not.

Crop factor is nothing to do with alledged magnification. Its down to pixel density - and in the above example the full frame camera has more of that as well.

That is irrelevant, a 100mm lens is the physical focal length of the lens, it will always be a 100mm lens, whether on a D60 cropped sensor, D3 full frame or if it would mount, on a medium format camera.

Once again turning the thread into an argument!:nono: What on earth this has to do with camcap's original post is beyond me. Chaz, you have been asked this before (and not by me) but why do you have to make such irrelevant comments and look to turn everything into an argument...?

so out of the 2 lens which one is the best ?? i think i want the sigma but if i get the Nikon would i want the extra zoom

Nikon, never mind the reach go for image quality, the variable aperture Sigma stuff is not going to be as good as the Nikon, had you thought of saving a bit longer and going for the Nikon 70-300VR?

I got a Sigma 70-300 with a D50 I bought and I was quite surprised by how good it was for a £70 lens.

The 55-200 VR really is excellent so unless you need to go over 200mm then its a very sound choice.

Hmm, i think i would say Sigma. I have had the 55-200VR and i have had the 70-300VR which was a cracking lens but i still have the Sigma 70-300 APO.

I find it's good for the reach and the macro function is real handy to have.
