what's it called?

Yup, TTL cable.
For a wireless one you'll be looking at pocketwizards if you intend to retain TTL. If not FITP does some very reasonable ones

Pocketwizards don't work with Sony cameras (without an adapter) nor will you get TTL with them.

If you want TTL it'll need to be a cable,Nat. If you want to go wireless you'll need adapters on both the hotshoe of your camera and the receiver unit if you're using something like the PT-04 or RF-602 with a Sony flashgun.

Don't suppose your camera has a commander mode in the flash settings like Nikon does, that control the flash off camera ?

The Sony items are FA-CC1AM off camera cable and FA-CS1AM shoe (ebay searches will turn them up, they are rather expensive). The shoe isn't needed on the Sony HVL-F56 or HVL-F58 flashes as the cable can plug straight into a socket the flash. You can get "all in one" Chinese pattern copies that combine both parts into a single cable.

Does the A350 have WL flash mode? I can't remember if my A300 did as I didn't have a Sony/Minolta flash that could be wirelessly triggered when I owned it so never tried. If it does and you have a Sony flash then it should be possible to trigger remotely it using the on camera flash (I can with my 56 and I think the 36 works this way as well). If you have a different brand of flash then no idea!

I am also the owner of a sony a350, and can tell you that lots of people have had problems using off camera flash with Sony cameras and retaining TTL...

Basically for wireless flash there are 2 options....

Use a Sony flashgun HVL-F36AM or HVL-F42AM or HVL-F56AM or HVL-F58AM... doing this will retain all the usual TTL features as the A350 has a wireless commander mode using the pop up flash, but with the a350 there is no way to turn of the preflash, so this may be a problem.

Use Wireless triggers (possibly FITP has some, if not EBAY) I got some from ebay with a Sony hotshoe connector (otherwise you can get an adapter) , and 2 receivers for 2 flashguns, and use any non TTL flashgun (FITP has some good YongNuo ones and YongNuo are the same people that made my triggers), however as you may have guessed, TTL wont be possible.. so set-up must be done manually!

Whichever option suits your budget and needs!

My bad, didn't notice the camera :bonk:

AFAIK the Sony cords (genuine and clones) tend to be around 1.5m in length. This is the fully stretched length though, so in practice that's really only useable for putting the flash on a side-mount bracket or similar.

Crooked Imaging sell a straight 3 metre one for £35.99 which is the longest you'll get in a Sony-fit, however in theory you could daisy chain a couple of the to get a bit more working space.

FitP, is there any technical reason why an extra length of cable can't be added (either soldered or with plugs) in the middle of a TTL extension cable? I would have thought that if it's acceptable to daisy chain the "proper" cables, adding an extra length in the middle shouldn't be a problem.

I bought a flash from china ( cheap ) and it came with a lead which was about 20 cm long.... The flash came with the adaptor for my sony sony I guess it was for putting the flah to one side. Will I got to thinking maybe I can lengthen the lead so I cut it in half and got a lenght of speaker wire and soldered it in place. Now I have a cable of 5 metres and it works no probs... Ok it looks odd but does the trick.

I'm sure I saw a write-up where someone had chopped both ends off the TTL cable, and attached an ethernet socket to each bit. Then practically any length of off-the-shelf cord could be used. I'd have thought it would be o.k, but I'm sure there'll be a limiting factor in there somewhere!

I'd imagine you could, the Canon and Nikon cables come in up to 10 metre lengths

I guess eventually that the resistance of the wire would come into play after a certain length
