whats the best free photo editing software

Hey, been taking some pics a few months now and think i'd benefit from doing some editing. just back from travelling so until i get some money together icant afford to pay for photoshop. just wondering whats the best free editing software i could download??
i've only used picassa before but wanna try something different.

I use the GIMP. It's been covered recently I think, try searching for it, you're bound to find something useful.

Photoscape is also a handy little program, though much much much much more basic.

Gimp is a good programme, as well as photofiltre. It is very easy to use, more so than GIMP i would say. And the layers system isnt as confusing...

The GIMP interface is poorly designed. But the actual capabilities of the software is very good. Its just the interface that puts me off. Good if you are using Linux.
