So as I hope to upgrade some gear this year I made a little list. It's fairly humble and sensible. Have you tried a similar thing to actually map out your plans or wishes? Or even just a dream list?

Mine is fairly realistic to be honest, so maybe not so fun.


Gear Wish list

Nikon D700 body x2

Nikon 14-24 2.8

Nikon 24-70 2.8


Keep list

Check out / Consider

Nikon 16 f/2.8 (to replace 10.5) or another FX fish
Nikon 50 1.4 (to replace 1.8)

Sell/Trade - stuff that won't be needed with the upgrades

Nikon d200 body x 2 (two grips, one damaged)

Nikon 17-55 2.8

(Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR) maybe but only to fund the upgrades. If I get some decent cashflow this year then I won't sacrifice this lens. I love it.

This might bore some people, just thought I'd put it down myself to see if there were any holes and work out a plan. I'll probably add/delete with research and testing but I think it's a decent set up.

TBH, although my D2x can't give me anywhere near the high ISO performance of newer cameras, I'm pretty much settled on DX for the moment because I have the glass I want.

For me, it's flash and light modifiers that interest me now. Would love a set of portable lights like Rangers, and I want to get kitted out with strip boxes and more brolly-type stuff. Pretty boring really but that's my direction...,

Lights aren't boring!!!! They make me dribble way more than lenses!!! Lol
 
As I'm still new to all this photography lark I haven't got any long term wants....yet!
I currently have the Canon 350D with the Canon 18-55 IS, Canon 50mm f/1.8 and the Canon 55-250mm IS lenses.
The only items I currently have on my wish list are a macro lens and a new body upgraded at some point in the not too distant future, possibly the 600D or 60D. That will be towards the end of the year though.

I'm looking to improve my dogs in action photography and want the f/2.8 to give me better separation from the background.
 
Lottery win = New house with enough space for studio, shed load of primes, multiple bodies, and nice L glass.

Realistic = Might try to replace by main walkabout zoom this year with either Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS version, or the Canon 17-55mm. Would also like to add a 28/30/35mm and 85mm prime. Wouldn't mind exploring wide angle stuff too, but really need to get a telephoto zoom. Trouble is, since I have previously owned L glass in the 70-200 range, nothing else competes once you've sampled it. :)
 
Over 2011 I'll probably add:

D700
16-35mm F/4 VR
70-300mm VR (don't really need the F/2.8 of the 70-200mm)
and depending on how cash is, I might a 85mm F/1.4G too.

A full set of Lee hard grads, and a big stopper will also be added to the collection.

My 17-55mm F/2.8 will likely get sold to part fund the above, but other than that the rest of my kit will stay.

I pretty much have everything I need and lots I thought I needed:lol:

Looking to add some more lights but as they don't excite me that much unlike Danny, I've still not got round to it:D

I'm finding more and more I'm wanting to combine film and stills- I know there are shortcomings but it's been proved that good results can be achieved and rather than spend a small fortune on a dedicated Pro-Camcorder, I'd like to use my existing kit. I'd therefore like Nikon to demonstrate in 2011 that it's now got the right strategy on movie mode and will offer something to better Canon's 7D and 5D MkII. I wasn't overly convinced with their D7000 offering. Fingers crossed the D800 is what I'm looking for and I'll buy that.

If they don't get it right (IMO;)) I'll probably have to suck it up and switch to Canon and use those horrible white lenses though I'm sure I'd have a go painting one black just to see:lol:

Got - 20D, Siggy 20mm f1.8, 30mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4, Canon 50mm f2.5 macro, Siggy 150mm f2.8 macro, Siggy 12-24mm, Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, Canon 20-35mm, 70-300mm.

Wish for - Canon to bring out a camera biased towards maximum image quality at base ISO but also with good high ISO performance, increased dynamic range, swivel screen and in body IS. If it's full frame I'd hope for an inbuilt flash too. I have no chance and will be keeping my money.

This is cool! My main aim is hi iso performance. I'm happy enough with my current lenses, most of which are listed and flashes etc. Though at least one sb900 would be beneficial! I like my sb800/600/smallers but mmm 900 :)

Maybe a studio lighting kit but still undecided

If i had bags of money id buy every L lens on the market and a couple of 5D II's (or III's :)), wouldnt touch the 1D's, again, too heavy and faster frame rates mean nothing to me so no real benefit but id still have to keep a crop body so would prob have a 7D and a 60D (for the flippy screen thingy) as backups. Without doubt though, id have to stay canon, L glass is far too stunning to turn your back on.
 
Slr wise I've got everything I need, would like a digital back for my old 5x4 camera but they're still silly money for a decent one
 
Realistic 2-5 year plan (in rough order):
  • Sigma 24-70 f2.8 HSM
  • Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM (might go OS, but froknowphoto.com did a review on a D3000 and got some great shots without)
  • D300S (or a D400 depending on prices once I have the cash)
  • 1-2 SB-600 and maybe a SB-800 for better CLS control than the onboard, with stands modifers etc.

That gives me 24-200 at f2.8 so after that I'll probably want more at one end, so would look into a 1.4x or 2x TC or a wide angle depending on which stop gets hit more.

Fat cash influx:
D3s, the trinity, and some SB-900s. Then see where that gets me.
 
Before the end of 2011 I'd like to replace my current pair of kit zooms with a faster zoom, currently looking at the Sigma 17-50 OS. After that I'd like a nice fast prime which will likely be the Nikon 35mm 1.8. Maybe a third party flashgun if funds allow.

This may well wipe out my entire camera budget for this year. Next year, maybe a wide angle and a faster telephoto. Once I have all my glass in place I may think about a body upgrade. By then, maybe a used D7000 or D300s. I love the idea of a D700 but don't like the idea of having to replace all my lenses.
