When do you all think that you will never be good enough.:(

I put photos on here that I think that are good then look at them and they look OOF etc and when someone else puts nice photos on I get really down and wonder why I can't do it.

I know I have not got the software for editing but I am trying to edit them with the software I have got but does not seem to make any difference :help:

I have been practising and not getting anywhere and getting really disheartened:'(

We all go through it don't worry.

Software is a pretty important part of digital photography, unfortunately.

What software are you making do with? How long have you been shooting?

Oh and it's easy to be your own hardest critic, chin up:D

Never give, up you never learn everything or know it all, life is a learning curve and you only get better if you keep trying.

Photography is hard, some people are naturally gifted, the majority have to work at it all the time, most people who put pics up here that are really good have probably shown you the handful that are great out of the thousands they have taken.

I get dishartened sometimes bt then when someone says they took 2000 pics at the same event I feel that i have got a good result from what i took.

Its all about perspective, as long as you enjoy it keep at it you will improve, keep putting pictures up and the great people on here will help you and guide you

Don't give up, many togs go through a bad patch, it's usually something simple. Have a look at the cheap or free software, Gimp is free, and I'm told Tesco do something similar-ish to photoshop 7 for about a £10, either of these will let you sharpen and ajust your images. Most digital images need some sharpening to compensate for the anti alias filter on the sensor, also resizing for the internet can make them look even softer.

I know how you feel Briony, dont let it get you down im in the same boat as you just enjoy yourself some members will critisise your work in a nice sort of way others maybe a bit more harshly keep your chin up get to a standard that your satisfied with thats all that matters in my book:thumbs::)

I think it you are not satisfied with your shots then with practice you could end up being a lot better than someone who thinks every shot is a masterpiece. We all started out sometime and I imagine the majority of people here have learnt as they have gone along and from experience.

Keep at it and keep posting - often the critiques you get can help point out where/if you need to change something.

I have been at it amateur and professional for over 64 years

and I am still learning.
If you look back over your earliest work you will see that you are getting better.
It Just takes everyone time.

Don't get disheartened, I think we all go through phases where we lose our way.

Have a look back at your first pics you took that you thought were really good. Now do some honest crit on them, and with those eyes, go out and photograph it again - I reckon you will see then how you have progressed and that will give you a confidence boost.

There are some great photographers on here, use their work as inspiration, not a stick to beat yourself with. Maybe look at some of their pics and go out and try to do it yourself.

The more important thing is do you enjoy photography ?
If you enjoy it then don't give up, it will all start coming together, I love looking back at some of the stuff I shot several years back and comparing it to what I take now.

My advice would be to concentrate on the basics now.

Get the focus spot on first, then the shutter speed/aperture right for your subject.

The rest will come.

As said above if you enjoy it keep at it.

If you dont enjoy it put the camera down for a week or so and see how you feel then. Dont sell up you will regret it I am sure.;)

When I see some of my shots come up on the right hand side of the home page" where they display random shots from past comps" I cringe :gag: Its when I see these I know how I have progressed myself .

So keep at it

Don't let it get you down, we've all been there! (Sometimes I still am!)

Lots of very valid point to take away from the good membership here. Yep, my currect camera is at 8000 and my other is at 5000. Does that mean I have 13,000 good shots. Nope, not even near it. At a wedding I can shoot 1200 pics..........and end up with 100 or so in the album once it's all whittled down.

My own personal stuff I mess about something chronic with! Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.

It has taken me three years of hard work and a heck of a lot of fun to get to the standard I'm at now and there is still a long old road in front of me.

So tell us, what is it that you DO like and what don't you like about what you are doing?

I feel the love in the forum :)

Briony why not keep an eye out in the 'meeting places' forum here and get along to one close to you. Or if nobody has one lined up why not post there and get one started. Then you can tag along with a tog for a day and pick up some helpful tips and advice

Dont give up whatever. I like to think i have learnt a bit over the last couple of months. I notice you are from Oxford as i am. I believe there is a camera club in Kidlington, although i never went down that route. Must admit i have only ever posted one pic in the forum, my efforts are just not good enough-Yet!!!:)

I can only really repeate whats been said but its important so I feel no problem going over the same things.
We all start at the beginning nobody ever started as great fantastic photographers, all those photographers on here now that you admire I can guarantee (hmmm sp?) had a stage where they thought they were going nowhere.......but they persevered. You know what in a few years time on this same board someone else will be making this same point feeling that they can`t get to the standards that you are setting :) if you persevere.

The best piece of advice I can give is that you go out and practice, practice, practice.

Ah, get a grip girl! Actually, no, dont do that yet, get some editing software  ;)

Briony, I think the messages already posted say it all really. Years ago i did courses and all that stuff but my pics were still mediocre at best, then 2 years ago I found this place and whilst I still take some total carp sometimes [ok, a lot of the time] I can now normally manage a few good ones each time just because of what I have learnt here. No one is a photgraphic genius from the off, even if they have a brilliant eye for a picture, they normally have to learn the technical side of thweir camera, and so on, so just practice, post, absorb the comments, act on them and you will improve. oh and most importantly, enjy it!

As has already been mentioned, you'll find yourself improving over time. I can look back at some of my negatives from the 1980s and what might have seemed OK at the time, would in my view be rubbish today. The point is you do get better with practice and patience - so don't call it a day whatever you do. Just enjoy your hobby.

Briony, have posted on your thread in the "Birds" forum, if you pop over and answer the questions I am sure we can help

This one

tesco photo restyle

If you want my software your more than welcome to it

drop me a pm or reply in here..

md;)

With regards to editing software why not get on to adobe.com and download a free 30-day trial of whichever editing software you fancy (Photoshop Elements, Photoshop CS4, Lightroom 2)?

Personally, I haven't used my camera for a couple of weeks now, just taking a break from it all. I have a christening coming up in the next month so I'll get the mojo back then no doubt. :)

never give up, never surrender!

Like everyone says, we all go there.

I have asked A question on other topics before to do with soul and I found this applies to everything you are passionate about.

I have asked myself the question before: HAS MY PHOTOGRAPHY GOT SOUL

At first i was taking pics of anything and I would wonder what to do with an image after I had done what I could with it, Like most I would wish I'd never posted it after because It wouldnt look like it did before.

Then I had to ask myself what im interested in?
What do I like to look at?
How can I put my soul into my photography so that a viewer gets a bit of me with the pic. a bit deep I know but thats whats made me try harder
I dont worry to much about the critics as Im the only one that knows my abilities, and I try to email the people in my pics a copy, so if they like it Im happy.
my pics are rubbish by some standards but im getting to where I wanna be.

keep it up.

Why not set yourself a small acheivable project? I focused on bird photography until I thought the same as you and stopped shooting. I set up a desk top studio, well a desk and a black sheet really, and had a go at smoke and filaments. Good laugh and a couple of tidy images too!
If you enjoy it, carry on doing it!

Can I just say THANK YOU to all of you out there who have lifted my spirits slightly tonight and to thos of you who have p.m.'d me I really do appreciate it. I am not giving up and my next aim is to win one of these competitions on here before I die!! LOL:lol:
