Hi people!

My wife and I are looking to move away from where we live because we hate the place!!!! We love near Rochdale.

Where can you recommend for a move? We have £180-200k to spend on a 3 bed.

Hope inspiration is on its way :)

all places have good areas and bad areas... your question is far too simplistic to be honest.. theres probably thousands of people in and around rochdale who love the place and wouldnt want to move..

town/city/seaside or country ... they could be topics to discuss the merits of moving too from.. but not town to town...
 
I guess a start is to consider if you would prefer a smaller town or a larger town.

Rochdale seems to be about "mid sized" according to this list of towns in size order

If I moved then I would not decide to live in a very small town like Taunton as it does not have much going for it really as a town, but it has good rail & motorway links and is quite close to 2 coasts and housing is fairly cheap.

I live in North London but if had the chance would move up to the North coast of Norfolk, smashing place. Next would be the Lake district, then the Cotswolds
 
Are you retired, I moved from northants to Cheshire for work and prefer it here because there's so much to do within an hours drive
 
According to the Sunday Times on 5th Feb, the happiest place to live is Carlisle, followed by York.

Reasonable house prices in Carlisle too - but a bit wet for my liking.

like already mention everywhere has its good and bad, Groby is a nice part of Leicester, I live the other side in place call Knighton which is also very nice, but there are many many less desirable places in Leicester

No, I'm. It retired. I like the idea of an hours drive to lots of places. We're considering Lincolnshire for that reason. Fast roads everywhere.

I do like the idea of coast or countryside but it must have relatively good access to a city.

That might be a struggle :-) were in a house around £250k at the mo but due to child care costs we'll have to downsize for a while.

North Wales coast... cheap-ish.. access to loads of countryside and coast.. easy access to Chester :shrug:

Plenty of choice in Cheshire for the right money.

I live just north of warrington and am 30 minutes from Liverpool, Manchester, Stoke, Preston and inside an hour to Wirral Coast, Merseyside coast, Southport, Chester, Lake District, Peak District, Sheffield, Leeds, Birmingham, etc. The M6 and M62 are on my doorstep so very easy to make good miles along them and an abundance of A roads too.

LOL - you are making it sound like the perfect place to get away from ;)

Where I live is the opposite, Somerset is a great place to live but everywhere else seems a LONG way away. Snowdonia is 5 hours and I rarely get to the Lakes or Peaks. My Mum is a monumental 10 hours non-stop drive half way up Scotland.
Somerset has nothing high profile special, so we get bypassed by the tourists on their way to Devon and Cornwall (best avoided unless you like crowds). Nice and quiet in an AONB kinda way :)
The other good thing about Somerset is that part of the local accent involves speaking very slowly, handy if you weren't brought up here.
Although I live in a very rural location in the Mendip Hills AONB, I can be stepping off the park and ride in the centre of Bath for some posh shopping in 50 mins. Bristol and it's amazing waterside are slightly quicker. Wells, the smallest Catedral city in the UK is just down the road and has good market town type shopping. So although I'm rural it's not a major hike to go and do anything - except get away from Somerset!

If I were to move, I'd probably head for North Wales or the West Coast of Scotland.
Both are relatively affordable, fantastic surroundings and friendly natives.

I've been to Rochdale. It isn't nice. I'm not surprised you wish to move!

I went to Formby a few months ago. It's nice there. Got a good vibe. Friendly natives. Houses are within your budget for a 3 bed too.

That is a bit rich coming from someone from Stoke-on-Trent.

Rochdale is looking tired, no doubt about it and living in a 'village' like the 'boro won't help your ideals of a town life when Rochdale heads that scenario.

Lincolnshire was my 1st thought for you but remember there are good parts and bad parts of any area.

Unfortunately house prices reflect the areas of residence rather than the quality of the house which is goes totally against anything else we buy, why is that?

Good luck in searching for a 'better' life.
 
I was brought up in the countryside, then lived in big citys for 30 years, now I live back in the countryside where life moves nice and slow with no hassles.

Fast roads in Lincolnshire? Tell me where?

As I recall the County only has 12 miles of dual carriageway in total.

Mind you I do like it here on the outskirts of Spalding.

Get a nice 3 bed for 180-200k.
 
What about somewhere like Kent. Plenty of rural stuff, access to city of Canterbury, lots of coast within an hours drive, easy access to London and places like Bluewater, Lakeside and Westfield (if you're into the shops).

And the best bit - you can be on the continent within an hour and tour round France, Belgium etc etc. Eurotunnel keep sending me emails flogging crossings £22 each way out of season! (I don't live in Kent by the way....maybe there are some negatives)...
 
If you want to stay in the NW we're in a great village with Preston 10m north, Manchester and Liverpool 35 - 95 minutes away, ( with airports to really get away), depending on the time of day, the lakes and N Yorks an hour away - no-one wants to go north....... and house prices are still dropping.

And not too far from Rochdale in case you want to go back, stand on top of a hill and laugh at them:D

Why is it that whenever I go to Rochdale it's raining?:lol:

I'd say 80% of the county roads in Lincolnshire (which covers a lot of it) are unrestricted (60mph). So as my grandparents say, everything is 20 mind away :-)

Rochdale is wet... No doubt about it. That's why we're attracted to Lincs. they have droughts!!!! The only drought we get is if the beer delivery wagon gets stuck in snow :-)
 
Was born and bred in Watford. Lived there until I was 24 then moved to Norfolk.... I'd never move back to an urban area.

We now live in a very rural part of south Norfolk and love it. We can go for a walk round 'the block' (2 miles around some fields!) and not see a single car. Love it.
We have five fords within a mile radius of us. Can get to 3 feet deep in winter (fun in Land Rover!).
But it's not for everyone. Our nearest village shop is 3 miles away and the nearest supermarket (if you can call it that) is 7 miles away. Nearest reasonably priced petrol station is 7 miles in the other direction! You need to decide what your priorities are and look for areas that meet those needs.

Other areas I adore are the North York moors and Yorkshire Dales. But house prices can be crazy.

I'm not sure it is that much,but when you take into account the mobile slaloms sorry tractors, (it is a very agricultural county), it can be hard to make good progress. When a HGV gets behind them it is even worse.

On some roads they even have passing points every 400 yards for the famer to pull in.

still been here going on 7 years and love the place.

If you like droughts then Lincs. is one of the places at high risk this year.

How about moving slightly further south of Lincs to Suffolk.

Somewhere like Stowmarket is affordable, not too big, excellent road connections to Ipswich, Norwich and Cambridge, direct and fast train service to London.

It's also marginally more scenic than Lincolnshire which can be a bit flat and too remote.

i don't know if i dare suggest this, what about a quick nip over the border, daft as it sounds there are some lovely places around Huddersfield and Holmfirth, not too far to go, near to some decent sized towns, not that far from the dales, peak district and east coast, personally i live in a small village just outside Wakefield, i'm 7 miles from Leeds, and 1 mile from the M62 in one direction and the M1 in the other, i can be in Whitby in 1 1/2 hrs, and the dales and peaks in an hr, but if i were to move within the area it would be out towards Huddersfield

Moving over to Yorkshire!?!?! Yeah, I wouldn't mind :-) we had our daughter in Halifax so I've already started the family turning over to the dark side :-)

I think Skipton and Harrogate would be high on the list if we to move over that way. But the draw of better weather elsewhere is still niggling at me :-)
 
I always judge a town or city by its shopping centre.

You can always find a nice street somewhere in a town (mostly ;) ), but if you go to the shopping centre and its horrible and run down and full of oiks, then what is the point?

I've spent lots of time around Manchester, Bolton, Warrington, St Helens, Liverpool and Chester and the only place I would live is Chester.

You'd not get much in N Norfolk for £200K.

I'd recommend York, it's a really nice small city, surrounded by great countryside, not too far from the coast, not too far from Leeds (as a near big city), <2hours on the train to Londinium.
