Which Domain Hosting do you use for CNAME's ?

Hello all,

Im currently with Photoshelter and want to use a CNAME with Fasthosts but this isnt possible.
Fasthosts want you to use the format xxx.yyy.co.uk (where .yyy.co.uk is your fixed domain name and you cant change it) when photoshelter needs to be yyy.xxx.com

So im looking at transferring from Fasthosts to someone else.
I dont need to pay through the nose for website hosting just domain and email.

Well the CNAME is part of the DNS if fasthosts wont let you migrate your domain to someone else. I buy domains from 123-reg for like £3 a year and even they let me set domain records to whatever I wish. They also do hosting and e-mail forwarding however I cant vouch for it's quality.

I use eukhost.com for hosting although its £40 a year which if your hosting gives you some fairly decent features but it depends on what exactly you need features wise.

Cheers for that. Its a pain that Fasthosts do that, but TBH they have been fairly good up until this point.
£40 is probably too much for what i need, but will check out 123, ta
 
I'm using Domain Monster for my domains as they are a domain company, rather than a hosting company that does domains.

I set my CNAME up for Photoshelter without any problems.
 
Slightly confused over what your trying to achieve. CNAMEs are part of the domain DNS and generally don't relate to the hosting at all. You just need to make sure theirs a pointer for the domain on your hosting account.

Personally I use A records for everything as it only requires one lookup. Cnames simply point to an another Record.

www A <server-ip> www.mydomain.com
subdomain A <server-ip> subdomain.mydomain.com
anothersub CNAME www.mydomain.com anothersub.mydomain.com goes to www.mydomain.com

Youre confused ?
You lost me at domain.

What i want is for the url to be showing <mydomain> at all times in the address bar without it showing mydomain.photoshelter.com.

Is that they way you explained ?
If so i need to go off and do some more reading on how to do this as i thought CNAME was the way to do it.

I think I sort of understand what your doing.

Im not entirely sure how photoshelter works. Im assuming they give you a URL <username>.photoshelter.com and you point a domain name at it.

In which case yeah the way your doing it *should* work. The other way of course would be to create an A record pointing at the IP Address of the photo shelter server however you would probably need to tell tell them what domain you were using and again it's all down to how they work.

Ive just had a look and i cant even change the IPS tag until after 60 days of owning it sonwill have to wait a bit anyway.

That's correct. You would need to own photoshelter.com to be able to setup a CNAME mydomain.photoshelter.com.

Take a look at freeparking for sure. They use URL masking which I think does what you want. This is from their FAQ
Fourthly we use URL Masking!! - a technology which allows your domain name to remain in the browser address bar even though the pages of your site are being served from another address (the address you specify for web forwarding).

Doesn't domain forwarding have an option to keep the url on the address bar?
 
Sounds a whole lot of bother to me. I take it this is free hosting? And I'm assuming you have a domain (address) assigned to you, something like yourdomain.photoshelter.com?

If so, unless photoshelter let you change it, you cannot do anything about that prefix. So if you want to change it you're stuck.

You may be able to point your own url at that hosting, in which case you can have yourdomain.com. But I guess that is down to what priveledges they allow.

If they don;t allow the priveledges, I'd move elsewhere. Even if you have to pay for it, you can get hosting for £1pm. Set up any domain you like, set up your emails with google apps (completely free I believe), point your mx records there, from Fasthosts, who really aren't that bad, and you're sorted. Full control over everything.
 
The Fasthosts control panel only seems to allow CNAMEs within your own domain, not making CNAMEs that point to other domains.

EDIT: actually that's wrong according to unpluggeds link you can do CNAMEs on it to other domains

Ah,

Think i have solved it (only took me a couple of hours geez :bonk:)
The CNAME can be anything and points to a custom domain in photoshelter, so doesnt matter what i put - i.e xxx.mydomain.co.uk pointing to custom.photoshelter.com
Then just set it in PS.

Now its pointed i just need to wait.
I do however pay £15 a year for email hosting. If this CNAME works out OK im going to stick as they have been OK so far (albeit they dont actually do much !!)

Photoshelter is a whole lot more than hosting, they do let you change it - with a CNAME, so instead of yourname.photoshelter.com you have xxx.yourdomain.com which shows your Photoshelter site.
 
And photoshelter wont let you ammend an A Record as "their IP's are subject to change so they recomend a CAME.

Got mine now showing whatever.mydomain.co.uk

Coud i theory have WWW as my custom CNAME making the site always show www.mydomain.co.uk or would that not work ?

Might try it.
 
You can, I used to have that, but decided to keep www. as a landing page, so when with photo.

TBH ive just looked at photoshelters tips when using CNAME's with Google Analytics which seems to be different when tracking with CNAME's which i cant be doing with.

I setup this site to take the stress off doing all my jobs. Working well :bang:
