Which DSLR to buy?

I moved up from a Finepix 7000 to the Sony A350 because of the live view. The Sony A550 is well within your budget.

The Finepix is probably the best camera I have used to-date.
I have, IMO, pictures that would rival many ££££££ cameras. It is/was an affordable Semi SLR, which is very easy to use & light years ahead of compacts.

Some of the wildlife pics I took while in the Falklands are awesome.

Gonna pass it on to my son who is now travelling the world.

EDIT: Sorry, just seen you have bagged a 50D - great choice - now to get out there and take some pictures!

Cheers anyway mate, had so much help so far on here :)

I'm looking to join the camera club in Durham, hopefully I will get a chance to utilise more than 10% of the 50Ds capabilities ;)

I have bought the "Integral 8GB i-PRO 100x CompactFlash"

Are the UDMA worth the extra?

Cheers.

Lot of jargon around about memory cards.....Personally, I use 8GB sandisk Extremes, but to be honest, any of the modern sandisk cards should do you fine.....

The 50D has a massive buffer for high speed continuous shooting so don't worry too much about write to card speeds/times, reliability is the most important factor and Sandisk Compact Flash cards are one of the best makes there is.....

If you want something a little cheaper than the new Extremes, then any of these will do you fine: http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=107726

Oh, and NEVER buy a memory card from ebay....way too many fakes about and places like 7dayshop are just as cheap!!
