Looking at getting an 50mm equivalent lens for my D5000 so looking at:

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G £170 &

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM - Nikon Fit £399

Both lenses look pretty awesome and i would say the Sigma is just very slightly better than the Nikon but it's very close.

Which would you recommend and is there anything else i should look at?

I bought a 1.8 Nikon recently and its a stunning piece of glass. So good, in fact that I fail to see that the Sigma can be worth over 200 quid extra.

^^^^ agree not seen the Sigma lens myself but is it worth £200 more for the slightly larger aperture?

Have the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 myself and can't fault a well built lens with a nice solid metal mount over the kit lens plastic mounts. All the pics i have taken on it are nice and sharp.

I have a 50mm 1.4 AFS and use it for some 70% of paid work. Great lens, although rarely use f1.4. I personally prefer 50mm over 35mm especially for portraits. Around £300 and recommended.

Thanks chaps. I already have a 50mm all be it manual focus (a pain on Nikons!) so wanted something wider with AF. Been looking at loads of image examples of the 35mm f1.8 and I think it looks ideal and not worth the extra £200 for the Siggy!

Can certainly vouch for the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S Nikon lens. It was the first lens on my shopping list after getting the D5000. Gets almost universally good reviews, considering its price point. I would say don't hesitate in getting it - great for low light indoor shots when used wide open, but great outdoors too, can get some excellent out of focus backgrounds!

The Nikon 35mm f1.8 would be my choice along with 50mm f1:1.8 and 85mm f1:1.8 if it's fast primes are what people are looking for.
I have or have owned a number of f1:1.4s and IMO they don't perform any better than there cheaper stable mates.
