Which Flash?

Im looking to buy a flashgun for taking fishing shots in pitch black, ive just been using the cameras built in flash and havent been overly bothered about amazing photos in the past. However ive since brought a rain cover which cant be used at the same time as the flash so i think its time i invested, im also thinking about trying to photograph some bats while fishing too.

Can someone recommend a flashgun that will meet my needs without breaking the bank?

Are you looking for something that you can use in TTL mode or are you happy using a flash in manual mode.

Nissin do some fairly decent flashes at a budget if you need TTL and Yungnuo are very reasonably priced but most of their models are manual only.

It would also help if you said what camera you want to use it on.

its a canon 500d.

Im thinking i would need the TTL (im a complete novice)

Pick up a secondhand 430EX for about £120 or a MKII for about £150.

Either would do the job nicely!
