Which Lens to Hire

Looking for some advice here. I'm going to a wedding in July of this year where my wife is to be one of the bridesmaids. I have no intention of being the 'official photographer' but would like to get some good shots of not only my wife but of the wedding in general. My wife will be getting all manner of things (dress, shoes, hair make-up) for the day so I'm thinking I should be able to at least hire a lens!!

My current lens collection for use on my Nikon D3100 is;

18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens
35mm f/1.8
55-200 f/4-5.6

I'm probably only going to take the 35mm out of that lot and hiring either;

Nikon 24-70 f/2.8
Nikon 70-200 f/2.8

I think I'd quite like to do a reportage style but i'm not really sure which lens would be best. Any ideas or other suggestions?

Nikon AF-S DX 17-55mm f/2.8 G IF-ED is to a crop what the 24-70 is to FF and is what i hire in for certain functions.

Thanks for that Paul. The 17-55 does seem like a good option, a lot lighter than the two lenses i mentioned. I'll definitely consider it.

Well it's personal preferences really. If you'd like to be in the thick of the action then get the 17-55, if you'd rather take a step back and shoot without people noticing you then go for the 70-200. Both are great choices.

I'm doing a few weddings this year and I'll be using both of the above with a 35mm 1.8 aswell.

Dont take this as being rude, or as an attack. Its just my opinion :) Personally i think you should leave the slr at home. Weddings are a time to celebrate and enjoy. If the bride and groom have paid for a photographer they want their guests to have fun. Take a compact and get snaps, but leave the professional to get the serious stuff. The thing to remember the b&g are paying for you to be there and to have fun, not to look down a lens :)

Don't agree with this,been invited to a few weddings,as I take my camera and get reportage type shot's ,friends arriving, giggling children,once caught a page boy in a kilt flashing at a pagegirl :D

As long as you DO NOT get in the way of the paid tog good shooting as it makes a very nice secondry present when you give them the photo's.

another vote for 24-70.

its not about getting in the way of the paid tog. Simply you've been invited to the wedding to watch them get married, eat and drink a bit to much and enjoy the day, not turn it into a day worrying about your camera so much.

So what Dave King said was absolutely spot on. If you must take a camera take your 35 f/1.8 and worry more about enjoying the day then anything else. I really like this article. http://offbeatbride.com/2011/06/unplugged-wedding which I think says lots about why you should enjoy your friends wedding and enjoy being there instead of looking at it through the viewfinder

Whilst I appreciate the comments about not taking my camera, realistically, it's not going to happen. One of the reasons I invested in a dslr was to get better shots of weddings, parties, my kids, etc, so unless the bride requests no cameras it'll be going with me.

In terms of the lens, it looks like it's going to come down to a decision between the 24-70 and the 17-55. I have to say the lighter weight of the 17-55 is making me favour that at the minute.

Agree with everything. I take my camera everywhere, and while I love taking pics, it is not glued to my face all day. I have been to a number of weddings and taken some very good pics while enjoying the day, eating, drinking and socialising etc...

Another vote for 24-70, I find this the perfect focal length.
