Which magazinr

Print media has all bar died for a reason, in the 21st century the internet just does a better job of everything the old media tried to achieve.

There are some notable examples of printed magazines that might be worth a purchase purely for the quality of the images (honestly I’m not certain they’re still available).

But the stock photography magazines just recycle barely adequate content, and you’ll learn more, see better images and have access to more knowledge just by visiting here weekly TBH. Add the rest of the internet and I can’t think of a reason to read a magazine.

I get Black +White Photography, and for what I like to do its excellent.
Not too many adverts, plenty of info on all sorts,
Opportunity's to get your own work published.
Lots of content from past and present photographers.

Me too on Borrowbox for free
This is part of the problem for publishers. When the mags can be accessed free, and advertising is less attractive to suppliers and they want to pay less, then the economics of publishing fall down. AP trying to stick to weekly output is crazy these days, it's way too expensive on the shelves considering the small amount of editorial content, and as has been said, the result is regular recycling of content (if not the same articles then the same subject by a different author).
I used to like AP but agree that it wasn't really worth the price, I just liked having a photography mag to read occasionally. I still get some magazines but they tend to be club mags, national mainly, and I edit a club magazine too, but it's really hard to get content these days for all editors, and you tend to fall back on the same coterie of capable writers who can generate decent content, even if it sometimes gets repetitive.

The exception seems to be in really really niche areas. B&W Photography is a good example, and there are others, but they tend not to publish so frequently in order to maintain the uniqueness and quality.

Otherwise, forums are indeed a better source of varied content and reading material, although with so much of it being opinion, maybe is like a glorified Letters page sometimes? But with fewer and fewer forums like TP across many subject areas, thanks to the costs of running them, and internet warfare, forums are an endangered species too maybe.

Magazines have had their day - always an AP reader, but I stopped buying them in the mid-nineties. It's a shame - I much prefer magazines to a computer, but at least with a computer I can use an ad blocker . . .

I much prefer looking at photos on paper than screens. It's one reason I like (and make) books and zines

While general interest photography print magazines might have had their day, short run niche magazines are where its at IMO. I occasionally buy a copy of f8 magazine and Offline Journal when they have something that interests me.

I spent a small fortune on photography magazines in the past. I still have a few left after I filled two wheelie bins full for recycling. I’d rather buy books on photographers whose style I like. When I had a free subscription to these magazines online I hardly ever used them, for some reason I just preferred the printed magazine but perhaps that’s just nostalgia.

This^ - concentrates on images and not gear

I have a full set from issue 1 and I find it a great resource.

I read Amateur Photographer for years but haven't for years. The adverts at the back were always worth a look, I wonder if they are now,

Oddly, the ads were one reason I used to like AP! I could have a look at what dealers had 2nd hand and at what price, with the possibility of a trip down the road to Mifsuds in the offing.

These days, I'm rarely in town so got out of the habit of scanning the covers of the rags to see if there were any bits of kit I was interested in or techniques to explore. Probably saved me a small fortune! Mind you, I do still pick up a twin pack of Bike and Classic Bike on the rare occasions I do go down for lunch...

Hi

Which is better Digital photography or amateur photography

It depends on what you want from a magazine.

Paul Hill occasionally writes for AP, and seems to have a relatively good opinion of it. I have bought it occasionally, and found it to be more interesting than it used to be.

I may well have skimmed through Digital Photography in the past, but can't remember being inspired enough to buy it.

I get Black and White Photography every month, and find it enjoyable and useful going through my stored copies every so often. Although it has some "how to do it" type articles (which I wish it didn't) its strength is in reviewing the work of photographers, photographic exhibitions and new photography books; along with good quality reproduction. I wouldn't be put off by it being Black and White only,

Their companion publication Outdoor Photographer occasionally tempts me when I'm on holiday and just fancy something light to browse through, but the APs that i've bought and the Outdoor Photographers, quickly go to the recycling.

Both Black and White Photographer and Outdoor Photography are available "off the shelf" from news agents, and I occasionally buy "Aesthetica" from off the shelf, which, although a general arts magazine, has a strong focus on photographs.

I also subscribe to Studies in Photography, but this probably wouldn't be considered a magazine of general interest: It has a strange mix of photographic history and cutting edge contemporary photography. It also has a bias towards Scottish Photography.
