Hi

I have my Nikon 200-500 which I love, but I think a 70-200 will serve me well. Contenders would be the Nikon VR II 2.8, Nikon f4 and Tamron G2 2.8. I'm not that worried about weight but cost is an issue.

70-200 f4 @ £700-£800 in excellent used condition
70-200 G2 f2.8 @ £900 Brand new
70-200 VR II f2.8 @ £900 in excellent used condition

Any thoughts? I'm leaning to the G2, but I know I prefer Nikon glass on my D500.

Thanks

Andy

Only used the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII and find it works well on the D500:

Certainly looks pin sharp, as much as I'd like a new lens, having Nikkor glass on my D500 is more tempting.

I would consider the Nikon 70-200 VR I on a D500. Mine is pin sharp and one of fastest focusing lens I have used. Also it does not have the focus breathing of the VR II and is better value. The VR II is better on full-frame, but this is not an issue with a D500.

You can get the 70-200 f4 for cheaper than that. Mine was mint off her and I paid £630. Tried to sell it for £630 again and no-one bought it on here.

They regularly go on ebay in mint condition for £650 - it's a great lens.

The G2 is good - it's a bit strange to use as the VR is so good that it almost 'jumps' to and 'sticks' to subjects - causing image shift in the viewfinder. Nice sharp lens though and the AF is decent.

I had a VRi for years, and not long ago upgraded to a G2. It is like night and day. I love the G2, I spent months deliberating over a second hand VRii or a G2, I am glad I chose the G2.

Ended up with a VR ii, mint condition for £800. Seems excellent for my needs and I might get a TC20 for it as well and sell my 200-500. Need to do some side by side shots once I get the TC and calibrate it.

Really pleased with my G2 and the reviews are certainly very good for it!
