Which Sandisk SD card

No
I have just bought my first SLR (so idiot question alert), a Nikon D50 and need to get a memory card for it.

While I have various SD/SD adaptors knocking about in various sizes I suspect they are all mostly on the cheap/slow/fake side. These will be fine for odd shots initially I am sure but I want to get a decent card as well.

I am currently looking at the Sandisk Ultra and Extreme on Play in the 2GB size. The Ultra is a class 4 @ £6.99 and the extreme is a class 10 for an extra £2.50.

I guess I am asking if I am really going to notice the class speed difference as a beginner. £2.50 isn't much but over 3-4 cards say that's starting to be enough to buy something else I need, or 1/3rd of a bag etc.

Hmmm one side is obviously the saving of £2.50 for other things, however the other side is if in 3 months you're going to want to try something that pushes the extra speed and have to buy yet another card.

I personally decided to go out on the extreme just in case. I only bought 1 4gb as I have a standard 4gb backup and also an older 2gb backup if needed though.

At what point will I hit that limitation though? The camera can only muster about 3fps IIRC so at what point will that hit the card limit shooting say RAW+Jpeg ?

Or is it really a case of plug it in, hold the shutter down and see how long before it slows, and what it slows to?

Hi Chris my own expierience of SanDisk cards is that they are quite poor. They do have a great reputation and there are probably thousands of people who have had no problems.

My problem was that when i took a few images and the uploadfed them to my pc i found that about 5 or six images were missing.
This was using 3 different cards and two different cameras Pentax k10/k20.

I initially thought it was the camera so i swapped to a different manufacturer and all was ok.

I contacted SanDisk and after hours of customer service phone calls they wanted me to post the faulty cards to the czech rep to be tested.
The cost of postage was probably the same price as a new card .

As to your question faster cards do make a great difference when continuous shooting and uploading to your pc etc.

The cards i use now are Lexar Professional 233x speed 4gb and Kingston elite pro 133x speed 8gb albeit CF cards.

Order one of each and then you'll be able to make up your own mind. The slower card won't be completly useless unless you litteraly always use continuous shooting.

I've had a few sandisk cards and am currently using an Ultra II 4GB card. ON fine setting I get well over 1000 immages stored. Not had a problem so far. Paid about £10.00 for it from Amazon.

I guess they make so many cards not all of them will be flawless.
