Which TC's are best for a Sigma 120-300 f2.8

Having just purchased a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 EX DG, I'm looking for the best possible TC's to go with it. I'm after both 1.4x and 2.0x versions.

I'm getting variable advice from my two main dealers so thought I'd try here to see what suggestions I get! :lol:

Just for information, I've been told that the Kenko Pro TC's are possibly better than Sigmas own, or better still use a Nikon TC, so I'm a bit confused and naturally suspicious! :suspect:

I use Sigmna TC's with my 150-500 and have no complaints about them, though Kenko Pro's are well respected I understand. Shame you aren't closer you could have had a try out with mine.

That's very generous of you to offer, much appreciated, but as you say, not really close enough! ;)

I'm going to pop up to my local shop tomorrow as they have both Siggy's and Kenko's in stock.

Kenko TCs won't work with HSM lenses.

Your only option is the Sigma 1.4x (DG or non-DG makes no difference)

Try to find the non-DG Sigma if you can, as this has the screw drive fitting as well as the HSM contacts - the screw drive is missing from DG versions (DG is HSM only) - with a non-DG Sigma 1.4x TC you can use it with some Nikon AF lenses too :)
 
I use a x1.4 DG, and a x2 non-DG. The 1.4 makes very little difference in terms of image quality and focus speed, but to get the best from the lens the x2 requires a bit of stopping down to get decent sharpness.

Kenko ones do come in high regard, but don't play nicely with sigma HSM :)
 
Sigma 1.4 TC added to my sigma 100-300 f4 is great, no loss in IQ, speed etc
 
I had the kenko pro but as has been said it would'nt play with the 120-300 , swapped to Sigma and no more issues

No problem. Try to get the "non DG" as its more flexible. "DG" was just marketing snake oil.

A non-DG Sigma TC also has the screw-drive fitting that is missing from the (more expensive) DG version :D

Look for the screw drive slot for non AF-S / HSM lenses on the camera mount side

Serial numbers will start 1000xxxx. These TC's will work with Nikon lenses such as the 180mm f/2.8 AF-D and also AF-S lenses such as the 300mm f/4 AF-S as well as any matching Sigma HSM lens.

Thanks for the info, as I don't have any screw AF lenses, I've actually obtained a DG version now. :)

Do you know if the DG would work with the AF-S 300 f4.0 as it isn't a screw driven AF lens? If not I may well pick one up to see what difference there is, if any! :lol: ;)

At the very worst, I can sell it on at very little loss. I will give it some thought. :thinking:
