Which tripod head?

Hi guys, I'm going to pick up a Manfrotto 005xprob tripod over the weekend from Jessops, now that they've reduced the price to £105. :clap: However, as a novice, I was wondering which head I should get from either the Manfrotto Pan + Tilt Head MN804RC2 for £48.95 or the Manfrotto 496RC2 Compact QR Ball Head for £54.99.

I quite fancy the ball head, but, as I am getting more and more into macro photography I am wondering whether the ball head would easily support a Canon 550d plus a 100mm macro lens, and likely a flashgun too. I am really thinking of the angles that the head would need to support the kit. Is there a chance that the head would "creep" under the weight? If there is, I would rather get the Pan and Tilt head instead.

Other than macro's, I will use the tripod to take long exposures, landscapes and night shots. The 100mm macro lens is my heaviest, with my next heaviest being the 55-250 zoom, which actually is very light.

The 496RC2 supports my 5D, 70-200 f2.8 + extension tubes and a speedlight 430 flash absolutely fine.

:eek: That's more than I'll ever be putting on it! Thanks for that. It has put my mind at ease. :thumbs:



Houston1863 ... I used to do a lot of macro work and prefer one of those 3 way ( occasionally referred to as pan n tilt ) heads as they offer more control. They do bulk out the tripod a bit but worth that modicum of hassle I find.

Thank you. I am wondering whether a pan and tilt would be the better option as an all-rounder, particularly with my prospective predominance of macro. Anyhow, I have reserved both heads for collection tomorrow with the tripod, so I'll make a choice then. :)

Well, I went down to the camera shop this morning and tried out the 804 Pan and Tilt and 496RC2 ballhead. After having a play with both, I actually preferred the ballhead, and like the extra security that the friction control gives. So, I bought the Manfrotto 005xprob tripod and 496RC2 ballhead. :D
