Hi, I,m thinking of going to whipsnade in a couple of weeks. never been just wondering what its like to take photos :)

Best zoo I have been to for photos.

Many enclosures have no high wires and instead there is a deep trench around them. This means your view into the enclosure in unobstructed and you are on the same level as the animals.

I am planning to go one day next weekend if the weather looks reasonable.

You won't be disappointed

Its probably one of the easiest zoo's to shoot at.
Having said that the "paddocks" are quite large and sometimes its hard with the animals being
a long way from the fences or glass.

The Cheetahs are usually quite obliging, being not to far from the viewing area.
Although at times they will sit quite close to the glass.
The Tiger can be quite elusive, as can the Lynx.
The bears are quite obliging, the Wolverines (opposite) can be also, especially if you get there around feeding times.
(they vary)
The Lions are either sat on the bank or right up against the (very scratched) glass.

There are also paddocks of deer, Rhino, Elephants, a lake with water birds and Flamingo's
these are usually "easy"

The chimps are a bit hit and miss, but get there for feeding time and they sit right by the
wire. (I think thats around 11am)

There is a Lemur walk through, and if its a nice day they come right up to you.
The wolves can be a bit of a challange, again, unless you get there for feeding time.
Thats usually about the time the zoo opens.
There is a whole host of others of course, that's just the highlights :)

I usually shoot with a 70-200 or a 300mm, just to give you an idea of the reach you are likely to need.

I guess that has given you plenty to think about :)
Oh and if you have never been before, its spread out over a large area, it might be worth
thinking about taking the car in (About £15 iirc PLUS entry fee) although there is a free bus once you are
inside, and outside parking is £4.

I live behind the elephant enclosure :)

It is not a zoo it is a wildlife park :p great spacious setup. Love the elephant walking around the park. Especially with the calves it is great and you can get very close. Lots of nice picnic areas as well.

If you are in good health I wouldn't bother taking the car in. It never stops amazing me seeing people take their car from site to site. We walk around the perimeter from out house to the entrance and then walk around everywhere. We have an annual pass. My children are 5 & 9 now.

Totally agree with 70-200 which is what I normally carry with me. Dangling on the black rapid strap :) and a backpack with a picnic :)

Not according to their website ;)
Titled ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

Unless you take as much stuff in as me, buggered if I am lugging that about
on my back :D

Besides I am a "fellow" so it would be rude not to take the car in :)

Lol I am one too :) great for my regular trips into London ;)

I'm still waiting for the instructions for the "secret handshake"
Do you know it by any chance? :D

Not been to London Zoo in a lot of years, I must
make the effort.
Trouble is Whipsnade is only 20 mins away, its all too easy :)

We hear the animals in our garden. Or like later tonight as I have the bedroom window open. I love hearing the grunting lions and trumpeting elephants :) leaving early on a foggy morning and hearing the wolves howl is eary.

London is ok, the talks are good and the free parking is even better for visiting my clients in Westminster :)

Btw more nice spots in the area. Dunstable downs, Whipsnade tree cathedral, Ashridge forest/dockey wood. Ivinghoe beacon.

Only thing not too great is street photography which is my primary photographic interest.
