Yes
I bought a gig of new RAM and have put it into the slot but my laptop was still very slow so I ran another scan on Crucial and it said the slot was empty.

What do I need to do to get it working?

No, I have 1 slot which I put the RAM in

Right click on my computer and select properties. What is the amount of system ram shown.
It's possible you fitted it wrongly
It's not compatible with your system either by type or capacity.
It's a duff stick of RAM

Take out the original stick and repalce with new to see if it works. Use the same slot.

To clarify do you just have 1 slot or 1 spare slot making 2 in total?

ehat make model laptop is it and what RAM did you buy?

It's possible you fitted it wronglyI thought that so checked and there is only one way it goes in
It's not compatible with your system either by type or capacity.it's the one that Crucial recommended for my make and model
It's a duff stick of RAMI hope not:(

To clarify do you just have 1 slot or 1 spare slot making 2 in total?well, it says I have 2 slots but there is only one there

ehat make model laptop is it and what RAM did you buyCompaq R4000 and DDR PC2700?

Seems like the right RAM, I would suggest trying to fit it one more time as it seems that it's not in correctly. If it still happens you may just have to get Crucial to replace it.

Cheers Dman, have tried several times now but don't think it's a duff one

PsiFox - thanks for the link, I'm fitting it under the laptop not under the keyboard. Wondered where the other slot was :) Will give it a go when I finish work.

Thanks for your reply slicker, that's where I went originally and got what was recommended

oh yeah, just seen that..

as said above, next thing to try is swap them over and see if you have a faulty slot

There's only one slot and I took the old one out that worked and put the new one in

You may have a slot under the keyboard as well, check. If there is, try removing that stick.
Did you verify that the size you got was compatible (Max 2GB total)?

Did you put the old one in the other slot as well? Did it register?

What I did was take the old one put and put the new one in exactly the same place, there was no other place to put it

I'm going to give that a go tomorrow. The size is compatible, I went onto Crucial , did the scan and then bought what they told me to get.

It could well be that the stick I got was faulty, I hope it isn't but I've got an IT mate who's going to take a look for me.

I'm just going to start saving for a new laptop (or once I've sold all my old card making stuff). This one is nearly 5 years old

Thanks for all your help everyone, I appreciate it :)

Crucial do get it wrong sometimes. I know my dad had problems with some memory from them once and in the end it turned out that they had the wrong spec for his camera.

Generally I've found that they underspec - ie they say that my macbook can only take 2gb, but the 4gb I installed works perfectly well.

Can I be clear that you only have one stick of memory in and it is running slowly? That would say that the memory is recognised - no memory = PC not working.
Unless the PC also has some built in hardwired memory. If you remove the stick does the pc still start ok? If not then you know that the memory is working but that 1gb isnt enough to do much (tbh I wouldnt attempt to run windows with less than 1gig, and better with 2 or 4 if the lappy will take it.

I would think virtually all modern laptops will recognise new memory straight away, but there's just a chance if it's a few years old that you may have to go into the BIOS before it will see the additional RAM. I think to get into BIOS on a Compaq you neeed to repeatedly press F10 straight after the post tests. You don't necessarily have to do anything once you're in there, which sounds daft I know.
On the other hand it doesn't cost anything to find out so it's worth a try.

cheers
