Why not DSLR's

So this polite conversation to discuss the reasons he stopped you should take place after everyone has seen you be the only one to be stopped & has made their own mind up as to the reasons why?

Hi Corbystock,

I tend to go through life being positive rather than negative. I see no reason to be impolite to someone just because I can. This philosophy has served me well both privately and in business.

I obviously have no issue if you would be annoyed at the situation and want to react abusively to the Head, but I somehow doubt you will get what you want in the end. After all the OP really wants to take photos at his Childs school the next time there is an event!

By the way I had no problems taking photos and videos at my Daughters primary School from when She started until She moved up to secondary School! Being polite and kind to the staff and governors paid off as we now have a complete history of every event on DVD over the 6 - 7 years!

Best regards

Chris

Hi Chris, i see what you're saying & usually agree with your ethos BUT singling one person out in this way & not explaining his reasons to everone present could only ever end in speculation surrounding the OP. I guess i would react in the way i have mentioned because i feel that being labeled a phedo would be THE most disgusting accusation i could think of. It's a sad day when the guy in charge of a school is the one that needs educating.

regards,
Chris. :)

Parents are allowed to take video and photographs at my school, but we ask all parents to sign a disclaimer stating that they will not publish any photographs containing images of other children in the public domain.

Probably not worth the paper it is written on, but we have to be seen as doing our bit. The only alternative would be to say the parents couldn't take any pictures.

We are under extreme pressure from the LEA, driven by CEOP and the media.

Hi Chris,

I agree with your feelings and in this situation I have given the alternatives methods of dealing with the situation. Interestingly enough I feel fairly confident that if the situation had been explained in a firm but pleasant way to the Head it is unlikely that he would have continued with his rather odd demand.

I would be very interested in seeing what happens if the OP goes back to the Head to discuss it further and I do hope he does.

As it happens I don't think it is about being branded a P****, but it is about a Head who has somehow lost touch with reality.

Best regards

Chris

The head ask me to stop taking phots, I ask about every one else and he could not answer me.
So got my compact out and the head said OK

The guy's a nob. The world is full of megalomaniacs

Send him a letter of complaint as you wish to take the matter further.

Telling them that the priests should be a greater concern to the safety of the children, rather than any photographer did not go down well.

Where do I send the invoice for the new keyboard? This one's now covered in San Miguel!

Went to my boys school sports day yesterday, all parents there taking photos with compacts, mobiles and camcorders, I turned up with a gripped oly e3 with 50 - 200 on a mono pod and guess what? The head ask me to stop taking phots, I ask about every one else and he could not answer me.

you should have asked how the class photographs were taken..

i was told it is forbidden to use a mobile phone when i took my twin 4 year old boys to tumble towers playbarn.when i asked why i couldn`t use my mobile instead the lady said "its policy because camera phones are not allowed".i then showed her my 9 quid tesco work mobile that hadn`t got a camera and she still said i couldn`t use it!!

I attended my grandson's sports day last summer - he attends a special need school. I was prety sure they'd try to stop me taking pictures so a week before the event I sent an email to the local education authority asking them to justify the ban which I'd been told would be in force. I got a very polite response saying no such restrictions were in force within their schools and I should enjoy the day.

As expected the head came up to me as soon as I got the camera out of the bag and said I couldn't take pictures. I didn't say a word, but his face was a picture when I gave him a copy of the email from the LEA :lol:

Hi Bristolian,

That is correct the LEA won't make the ban. The governors are the end decision makers. The email is useful in your request to take photos but not the legal final decision I'm afraid.

Best regards

Chris

I don't own a DSLR, but in all the years of my sons being at school never had a problem taking photos or video's of school events. Other parents were using compacts, dslr's no problem. The only restrictions which were notified before hand would be no flash photography during assemblies, or school plays, sometimes video cameras would be banned for some school plays due to copyright probably down to use of songs in content etc.
As far as a school being private property, unless it is a private school then the school is funded by tax payers and not private property and if someone is a grandparent or parent of a child at the school, then there can't be any reasonable grounds for singling out dslr users against compact or bridge camera users.
If the Education Authorities have deemed their are no restrictions on the use of cameras in their schools, I would say Governors are acting above their positions in trying to enforce their own rules.

Chris,

I know you're right, but I was pretty sure the head didn't know any more about the legal situation than anyone else :)

Hi Nilagin,

Not sure any other way of explaining this but feel obliged for those that follow and don't read the whole thread to point it out again.

The governors ARE the law in a school! What they decide actually happens. They make decisions on how money is spent and how the school is run. If they decide there is no photography then all you can do is ask them to change their minds.

Chris

Hi Bristolian,

I am certain you are correct. If it was my Childs or Grandchilds school I would want to have a word with the head as to why they did not understand the limit of their power.

However I feel sure you are doing the right thing by keeping quiet. But next time he might be better informed!

Best regards

Chris

Hi Chris,
I had read the whole thread, nothing personal against yourself as you have been a school governor. I've just formed a dislike for them in my own mind as the primary school my two sons attended liked to treat the school governors like royalty. Giving the impression we should all bow down to them and obey them, treat them with more courtesy than you would expect to treat others. Governors always seemed to be parents with more money than most and revelling in their position. At school plays/shows they always got the best seats and distanced themselves from the rest of the parents all that was missing was their security or bodyguards.

Hi Nilagin,

Well if that is the case then are totally out of order!

When I was a governor we had a very good mix of both teachers, parents and co opted interested people in the village.

The important thing to remember is anyone can be a governor and if you are not happy with what they are doing for you then put your name forward when the elections come up.

Although disliked them or how they're treated wouldn't be ground for a complaint. School governors are assessed by Ofsted. So if you have issue with you child's school's board it might well be worth writing to them.

One school near me actually had their governing board judged unsatisfactory by ofsted twice in a row. When a school fails part of it's inspection twice in a row it becomes the LEA's job to fix it.

In this case a new chairman was appointed. Pretty much the first thing he did was sack the headteacher.

Fortunately neither go to the school anymore. Eldest is now at college and youngest in his second year of secondary. Parents don't get to go to sports days at the secondary school and unless the kids are in a school production, no shows to go to either, so I've no idea how the governors are treated in his current school, so no reason for complaint.

Hi all i am a school governor of our C of E primary school, and soon to be appointed LA gov of our tech school, i can think of no reason for this other than, your lens was bigger than his. and the LMS came into play (little man syndrome).

the only reason we would stop any parent / guardian from taking photos on sports day is if we had an issue regarding safeguarding children, some of our kids are in foster care for there own safety, so if there are any concerns we act appropriately this may include a few children not taking part as photos are being taken and wishes have been made not to include them.

phone/compact/dslr. we even allow nikon cameras  :D

perhaps an offer of copies for the school magazine and one especially of the head..head and shoulders of course...would have oiled the situation..

i am going to a sports day this week and will not take my dslr...as i dont have one
my bridge will capture enough to suit my purpose...and render decent prints for our family use

Our daughters school sports day today.

right had a word with our head, and you can take pictures as long as the children are in more than groups of 3, yes you heard it here, apparently the zoom Len's is capable of capturing a single head shot....i said that most point and shooot could take a single head shot :cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo:

although for a head shot she said i was fine with this.

i prefer the compact model with the cropped sensor and fixed lens...it does a decent head shot with suitable loadings

You see, I can't quite get the length with one of them... Its just not enough. One of these is more like it.
