Why?

The theft thread got me thinking - why do so many of you tell everyone what kit you've got, in details, in your signature, which can appear in public threads, and then some of you have links to websites with your name and area at the very least?

I mean, just thinking about it, isn't that an advert for thieving? Just wondering.

I can't be arsed being paranoid enough to try and hide it to be honest. I think I am more likely to be mugged when out and about with my camera in plain site, but I don't let it worry me.

If I was that way inclined I wonder how many houses in Liverpool I would have to break into before I found yours, I suspect I would get caught long before finding you :)

Well, for a start, you'd be in the wrong town LOL I'm near Liverpool but not in Liverpool :D

A guy I know has a huge collection of antique toys, which take up almost every room in his large secluded house. He also has a website showing every room in the house, his cars (with reg numbers) and his full contact details (address and phone number) in the whois...

I've tried to tell him he's tempting fate, but his arguement is that the kind of people who burgle houses don't know about things like whois data :bang:

Zoe
In 5 seconds I found your full address on google! I used to go there on Holiday :)

I don't think thieves trawl our threads. Our information is all over the web and any person with a web site is potentially a target. I'm not worried - I'm insured.

No it's not, why would companies house have my details? lol

Just a guess, do you live in Newmarket, Suffolk?

Because we have guns and look forward to skells trying to break-in...

its the same with car forums, where people say what modifications and in-car entertainment they have in their cars, again, for public consumption.
its the way of the world and won't stop opportunist theft (which most is)

Its a good point Zoe. One thing I've never understood is why some list their equipment on their website - makes no sense to me because the people who matter, ie clients, aren't interested!

What's a skell? :D New word for me!

Sorry - been hanging around with the bloomin' Americans for the past month...
Just a dodgy character - NYPD-speak for a druggie-burglar, as they have the appearance of emaciated 'skeletons' after a while addicted to cheap crack (I think)...

it's the footballers that are the silliest. No wonder they get robbed, they are live on National TV in a different city, it's obvious they aren't in.

I used to have all my kit listed in my signature. I removed it because I didn't want to come across as being the kit whore that I am.

I have adequate locks on my house, an alarm and suitable insurance. If thieves want to come in and steal all my stuff then they can give it a try.#

I also live in a very nice crime free area, we don't have thieves around our way.

I'm tempting them in so I can deal with them using the blunt end of a tripod :)

Oooh, now, as my kit is well used and not the most up to date, well, maybe .... I mean, Eosjd has already found my home addy

So we've established some of you are just equipment whores who like showing off ... that's fine, I like to know who I am mixing with

:D

so far I know you're all whores, show offs, odd bods and people who like an argie bargie on wedding threads.

oooookkkkkk

:naughty:

Sounds like me :)
I actually don't know why put my kit on the thread. When I first started on forums it just seemed like the thing everyone did. I've not really updated mine for a while and just never switched it off!

bragging and copycatting

People who burgle are generally opportunists, they tend to look for houses that are not secure and usually get in though peoples bathroom windows (or so I have been told)

To spend time trying to find someone who has lots of photographic kit does not make much sense, ie security ect I doubt its worth there time. Its easier to just walk down a street and take your opporunites......

Gosh this makes me sound really, really bad, :shake: but in my defence this knowledge comes from the job I do...nope that sounds no better :bang:!! But you all know what I mean :D

I wouldnt have thought your average low life thieving scum would take the time to first find a photography forum, find a member who is in the area they want to hit, then work out how to find out their address with the methods you describe, then case out their 'joint' waiting for the right opportunity to break in and nick all their photography gear.

I could be wrong I suppose.
