Wide Angle Primes for Nikon (FF)

fabs, this is exactly the pair that I got for my D700 when I decided to go the primes route without spending the big bucks.

Quite frankly they didn't blow my socks off for sharpness, though they ain't bad. They're not in the class of the excellent 50mm f1.8D for instance.

You've reminded me that I haven't used either for almost a year, though I'm thinking I may have disrespected these lenses. Time to put aside my beloved Tamron 28-75 and dig them out and give them another try !
 
Do you really need AF Marc?

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking at something wider than a 50mm, otherwise I might well have considered the 50mm f1.4
 
Fair comment Marc, i`m going the same way, old age and all that.............:thumbsdown:

Some of the old MF lenses are superb and can be had cheaply, I was gonna offer to lend you two, but if they are not what you need then no point. Don`t know much about the glass you quote, sorry.

No worries Ade (appreciate the offer though), it could be a while before I get my hands on a Nikon anyway and I haven't totally ruled out Canon yet. :exit:

I think both brands are good enough Marc, never been into this loyal brand warfare bit. In my case, the disappointing factor, is the buffoon behind the camera..................:lol:

* well certainly if tonight's camera club competition is anything to go by! :gag:
 
Although I have owned both the lens mentioned I only ever used them on film so can't really comment or help concerning use on digital :( though they were for me faultless on film :)
Wide Primes that I am using now though are the following
Nikon AFD 16mm f1:2.8 F.F.Fisheye
Nikon AFD 14mm f1:2.8
Sigma 20mm f1:1.8
Sigma 24mm f1:1.8
Tokina M.F.17mm f1:3.5
And I have no complaints about any of them quality wise.
 
I have the 35mm on my D700 and use it a lot, for me it is good enough for anything I'll ever need it for and I really like the FoV it gives and it's small size.

It's pretty soft, lacking in contrast and vignettes a bit at f/2 but that's all fine by f/2.8, it can be prone to flare too in direct sunlight that reduces the contrast a bit (I use a hood from my 50mm though).
