I need some help really. I am thinking about purchasing a wide angle lens. I would like to use one for landscapes, but also for dynamic portraits, including surroundings etc.

I am not sure which to go for, which focal lengths etc. I have looked at the Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-f/4, which seems a nice lens, however I am not sure whether that is wide enough on a crop body (I am using a Canon 40D). I have also looked at the Sigma 12-24mm, however thats more expensive.

Please let me know what you think! Any suggestions of other lenses also appreciated.

If you own any samples of these lenses, or lenses of these type - please send me some links here, so I can have a look.

I will be grateful for all help! :D

I don't see the point of a 17-35mm (unless you're looking for full frame compatibility) as there are some nice 17-50mm f2.8's and if that really isn't wide enough there are a few in the 10-20mm type range.

Most of these lenses are made for use with small sensor cameras and are not full frame compatible.

Yea, I suppose so. But I think that 10-20mm is a little bit too wide. I mean the whole idea is to get a 17-35mm effect on a 1.6x crop. This means that in theory the Sigma 12-24mm would be the closest.

I just want people's opinions.

Thanks woof woof! :)

Not quite sure what you mean by "the whole idea is to get a 17-35mm effect on a 1.6x crop" since you can only ever use a single focal length at any one time.

So, apart from quality and price any lens with a 17-35mm f2.8 range should suffice.

Or if the f2.8 is not an essential you have an even larger range to choose from.

2mm does make a difference but if 10mm is too wide for you you can always just zoom in a bit to something a little less...wide, but you might get addicted :)

The advantage of going for a 10-20mm is that they're a lot cheaper than the full frame Siggy 12-24mm. It's a wonderful lens and I love mine but I bought it years ago before the price was marched into a rocket and aimed at the moon.

PS. On a Canon APS-C...
10-20mm = 16-32mm,
12-24mm = 19-38mm.
Both very nice and if FF compatibility is not a requirement and the cost saving is significant I think that a 10-20mm might be a good choice, even though I love my 12-24mm.

Yea, well I am thinking of going towards the 10-20mm lens now. It seems to be a really nice lens and in a decent price range for me as well.

I meant to get a zoom lens, that will be the equivalent of a 17-35mm lens. Sorry, my wording was probably unclear there.

Have a look at the Tokina 11-16 as well. It's a litte more expensive but it's a lot faster and has slightly better image quality. However, it does have less range than the Canon and it is more prone to lens flare if you let the Sun hit the front.

I own and like both of these.

The Tokina has a nice f/2.8 indeed, however the range of 11-16 is not that great... And the price.

I think that the Sigma 10-20 beats it really comparing the zoom range and the price.

My friend has the Sigma, price and range are the only good things about it.

Might as well be the first on this thread to suggest the Canon 10-22mm, if you want wide angle you need less than 17mm at the wide end with a 40D

Tokina 12-24 f4 pro is good - I prefered that to the Sigma 10-20mm when I had them both.... Not at the same time thou..

Might have a few pic's taken with it (on a crop sensor - but was on a Nikon thou)

Or you can have a look here Pixel-peep just type in the lens & camera etc and it'll show you....
