widescreen aspect ratio's

I've just treated myself to a new 23" monitor, Samsung P2450H.

my problem is coming from an old 17" LCD non-widescreen monitor everything looks stretched when it comes to viewing images be it in photoshop or just ordinary windows image viewer. is this just because it's a wide screen moniotr and i need to get used to it or is there something i can do?

it does seem to be installed properly as all of my icons etc look right, just not my images
 
It sounds like you have still got your display set to the resolution of your old monitor, try setting it to the native resolution of your new monitor. I think you can do it by right clicking on the desktop and choosing display settings if you're using Windows.
 
Right clicked on the desktop and it turns out the inboard graphic chip can't handle the widescreen ratio, in the words of my tech friend "it's worse than ****" so going to pop round to his to see what spares I can steal off him.

He may be right, he may not know what he's talking about. :)

Many versions of windows, by default, will only display resolutions that it thinks your monitor can display. If Windows still thinks your old monitor is connected and not your new one, that will explain the hidden widescreen resolutions. Install any drivers that may have come with your new monitor.

It might simply be that you're running an older version of your graphics card driver, and that particular version doesn't support widescreen resolutions. Try downloading the latest version of the drivers for your graphics card.

Even my mother's 8 year old P4-1Ghz machine running Windows Millennium supported 1680x1050 when I bought her a 22" widescreen for it last year - I have since replaced her PC for her. :)

On the other hand, as I said, he may be right. It could well indeed be worse than ****, and you should buy a PC built in the 21st century. ;)
 
I've installed the monitor correctly and attempted to update the driver for the graphic chip. The computers only 3 and a bit years old but was supplied to me from my college, I've already had to upgrade the RAM due to there only being 512mb's of it origionally, the graphic chip has only 32mb of memory so I think it's time for an upgrade :)
