Never seem to get good images of these creatures, always a bit awkward to get good angles and DoF, so with this in mind I thought I'd try an image stack! First 2 attempts the little fella decided he would keep opening his mouth, luckily I did get one angle where he kept pretty still.

Brixham Stick Insect!

Wow! Good film Alien innit ...

Very nice Neil
I have n not seen one myself but as with many such things I am unlikely to see them round here.

Its got a face that only a mother could love…
but you made a shot that even I could like!

36 images is way too less and you could aim
at stacking the whole insect! …but a good start.

Thanks Kodiak, was hoping for more DoF but he moved ever so slightly on frame 37, thats the problem with live subjects!

Such great detail ... your lucky to get such critters not a lot around my way at moment.
Cheers mate, pretty happy with details but on reflection should of prob shot at 2:1 instead of 1:1 .

Unbelievable details & technigue ! In awe.

Forgot to mention... I have to use blur on his antenna as they were constantly moving.

An entomologist friend of mine, from Université de Montréal,
taught me a trick to get them at rest.

As he setups up (he uses a prop to simulate the subject), the
insect is already in a large glass container closed and with a
few
methyl alcohol to "stone" the subject. It will fall asleep for
a while (but will not be harmed) and should give you the time
to shoot.

"Should the first run not be successful, you may try again but
not with the same insect" he said. "The tricky part is how many
drops for how long… I made tests with very common insects
to get a good estimate." he added. Good luck!

"Excellent" image Neil, and a very good bit of stacking.(y)

George.

Fantastic stack and a great find, your stickies are really something different. I'm still looking for ours here but no sign of them yet.

Oh, what wonderful detail in the Flickr versions. I think that's impressive.
Thanks Nick

Stunning stacks and pics. Definitely a sci-fi monster.
Cheers Chris

Excellent macro.
Blimey a 36 image stack!...I have trouble with just the single image ;)...but joking aside, i might have to try stacking images sometime in the future.

Interesting subject, are these Stick Insects thriving in the UK?
Thanks Paul

Excellent work really impressed that you got that many shots to stack from a live insect
I normally just manage 2 or 3 !
