Apologies if this is in the wrong forum....mods feel free to move it:)

I'm going to the WHF on Saturday, and I know a few folks from here have been, what I'm after is, what is the ideal lens or lenses combo to take???

I can see from their website that getting close to the cats is very possible, is this a bit of a one off or am I going to be shooting at short range??

Cheers,

Darren

I'm there next month too and would be interested to know the same thing, it's worth having a look on flikr as there's a few nice photos from some people up there that have been before. Most have exif data so it'll give you an idea of what's good to take.

Are you taking your D300 or D700 (or both)?

I took a D700 and tbh needed more than the 200mm limit I had on the 70-200mm lens I used...on the close-up shots I used a macro lens (due to close manual focussing). I would recommend (if using full-frame) a focal range of 24-300mm if possible with your lenses.

I'll more than likely be taking the D300's, just for the reach factor. i've got a 24-70 f2.8 & 70-200 f2.8 and if needed i can wheel out a 300mm f2.8.

I'm a bit loathed to take the 300mm as it's just going to be a huge weight to carry around if it's not used :gag:

Cheers

Darren

Let us know how you get on anyway Darren, and post some pics up :D

We've organised loads of successful trips to WHF and there are many images displayed in the animals section, i would suggest finding them and reading the exif :

I found the most use for me came from a 70-200 f2.8 with occasional use of a 400

Problem is finding the threads as the search won't accept WHF as a search string as it thinks it's too short :(

Good call on the lenses, I guess I'll take the 80-200, 200-400 and my 105mm macro in that case

Most of my shots were with a 70-200.

If youre going for the day i would suggest you just spend a bit of time taking in the splender of the animals with both eyes for a while before you attatch the viewfinder to your face ;)

Cheers for all of the advice, I think i'll just take the lot and grin and bear it...lol

Paulie, I think you're right about enjoying the animals for what they are as well as photographing them.

When i was down there i used my 70-200 all day and came away with some great shots (in my eyes anyway):lol:

You will never be more than a short walk from your car so take everything you think you may need. It is then easy to get at any time during your day.

I use my 70-200 for 95% of my shots.

We have 8 group (forum) photography days booked there for next year.

Great place and anything from a 24-105 up will be fine.
70 -200 2.8 is what i use when i am there. but you can get some shots with a macro lens

Enjoy your day there...
Taken with a 70-200 2.8

Have used a 70-200, 16-35, 50mm and 100mm Macro there. In many cases you are likely to be just inches away so have a WA with you.

Have seen togs using the 500... generally 24 - 200 IMO

I want to go again definitely so I don't want to miss out on getting my name down! :)

I found that I used my 55-250mm the most when I went but that is probably because it had the best zoom out of my three lenses. I definitely want to invest in something with a bit more reach before I go next time!
