Yes
Got a new laptop and after the latest foray to Knockhill I went to load the pics from the memory card to the laptop, I have loaded the discs that came with the camera ( eos 1) but when I connected the card reader I got a message telling me there where communication issues, I checked for updates and found a couple. I tried again and the pics transferred but the message still appeared, any ideas? they look ok but have I missed something. Ta

OK - first, several questions:
  • what make of card reader?
  • is your W7 32 or 64 bit?
  • which updates: canon software; card reader maker; windows?
  • what does the message actually say?

And possible suggestions:
  • visit the card reader maker's site and see if they have a new driver for W7
  • if not, do they have one for Vista (32 or 64 bit, as appropriate)?
  • use Windows update with the reader plugged in and see what that comes up with
  • right click on 'My Comuter' and select 'Manage' then 'Device Manager' and see if there is a yellow marker on your reader (or anywhere else)
  • if there is look at properties and try updating the driver etc

Final suggestion: you might do better by posting under 'Computers, Websites and Other Technology' rather than 'Talk Photography'.

I have a 'Belkin Hi-speed USB 15-in-1 Media Reader and Writer' that no longer works after upgrading to Win7 (64bit). Last time I checked the Belkin site there were no drivers available. So, I suspect it's scrap.

Hopefully you have one that is better supported.

you dont need to load any software from a camera manufacturer to use a card reader
the OS...windows 7 or any other microsoft os...should pick it up on plug and play

i would uninstall all the camera stuff and try again

also one doesnt really need the photoprocessing parts of camera manufacturers software
independent software is more amenable
