Has anyone got a step by step guide to loading windows on a Mac Pro as a Dual boot???

Thanks Ian, is it all done while in OSX? or do you install Boot Camp and then reboot with the windows disc in??

An IDIOTS guide might be better!! lol..
 
My keyboard wont work while windows is installing!! it gets to the part where you press enter to install and nothing happens!! the other options are R to repair.. and F3 for something else..

Am i missing something??
 
Well, i got it installed, but none of the drivers work, it wont even connect to the net.. not sure why, iv tried putting the Mac install disc in and updating the drivers but nothing..

Im off to bed now! try again with fresh eyes..

Hi mate, had a wicked hol!! i didnt want to come home!! lol.. but then again i never do...

All sorted on the windows front.. iv got it all running nicely now.. it feels good to have the familiar feel of windows when im struggling with the Mac!! ;)

Use VMware fusion myself - very neat to be able to be able to be able to switch between Mac and Windows applications without re-booting.
 
Another vote for Parallels here - superb bit of software imhgo... ;)

Cost around £35 squids if I remember right and worth every penny... :shrug:

I take it you didn't go a bundle with the mac on its own.
 
Hi Nat, there are a few bits and bobs that i can do on the PC better than on the mac.. im more familiar with the PC platform for these things.. Other than a couple of bits im very happy with Mac.. Its nice to have both eh!! lol..
 
Ian, Which is better, Parallels or WMWare?? and try and keep it objective please!! i confuse easily.. :lol:
 
I have a discount code for VM Fusion as I was a beta tester. They told me to pass it round to friends so if anyone wants it let me know.

VM Fusion v2 allows you to access a Bootcamp partition in a window so you get the best of both worlds ie you can boot a windows partition OR if you just need quick access you can run it in a window.

To be perfectly honest for Windows there is nothing in it! Asda bananas verses Tesco bananas :bonk:

Bootcamp is more powerful but having to restart is a pain. I think both Parallels and VMware do the access to a bootcamp partition thing too !
 
im biased re VMware, it does exactly what i want it to and doesnt cause me any issues, for me the biggest thing was price, and as i got it for free because of my job, Fusion won hands down :D you wont go wrong with either really. Can buy both in the Apple shops as well, so no issues re supply :)
 
OK, but what do you mean Bootcamp is more powerful? Iv got a Bootcamp partition with windows on but it has a virus!! lol.. it was only on there long enough to do the updates and install Firefox and WinRar..

I think i'll have a go with Parallels, should keep the Bootcamp partition? od delete it and start fresh? Also, will the windows installed with Parallels support large files? as NTFS?
 
Thanks Ian, i think im going to go for Parallels for now and see how it goes.. i dont really need to do too much on windows, just bits and bobs..
 
Started with Parallels had niggling issues and went to VMWare - easy to install and very trouble free.

Is VMWare a windows program? ie, do you install on a PC so you can run OSX or the other way round??
 
Erm you really arent going to like me Frag ;)

VMWare Fusion is a Mac program that you install on your Mac, and allows you to run a windows OS, you can leave your bootcamp partition and it will allow you to run it without rebooting. The confusing bit is, VMWare make a workstation program too, that you can install on windows ;) hehehehehe Parrallels does similar things, but i just think Fusion is a tiny bit better.

Issues with device drivers also recognising the network, not recognising when external hard drives connected via USB or Firewire. Also a very poor tech support so solving any issue became very protracted .
 
So you can use them to install OSX on a PC and vice versa?? thats the imression i got while looking around.. So if i keep the partition, do i format it and use VMW or Parallels to install TO it, or will they install to the main MAc drive as an application?

Sorry for the bone questions guys..

So, if i had the Windows network sorted will it carry the settings over to the Mac??
 
no you cant install OSX on anything but a mac (officially/legally), but these programs allow you to install windows on your mac.

Fusion and parallels are just programs you install as normal, then run them, if you have your bootcamp partition it will then allow you to just run wiondows without rebooting the mac

No, after you install VM Fusion and Windows you have a completely fresh installation of Windows, previous settings do not transfer over and you will have to reconfig the Windows network on the PC side of the mac again.

Iv tryed to install Fusions 2 but when i get to the point it installs windows it says that iv got to check the time and date settings on the vitual drive!! then it wont install!!!..

What am i doing wrong?? :shrug:

just wondering if anyone had any idea on the reason for this?
 
i might just plump for Bootcamp!! im baffled as to why it would want me to check the time and date!! lol..

Not had that problem on the fusion installations I've done.

Suggest you contact the fusion technical support as to what the issue is.
