I used to have a boot CD that removed the Windows password which I used when repairing computers unfortunately I have now lost all the copies of it that I had. My brother is coming round with his fiance's daughters laptop on Saturday as she has forgotten her password. Now I could just re-install Windows over the top or remove the drive and pull the stuff off but anyone have something that can cut my workload down! Not sure at the moment if it is XP or Vista and there is only one account on the computer.

if it is xp, you might be able to log into to the account called "administrator" (no password)

you need to go to safe mode login

(one has to actively delete the account, and removing it is pretty rare, so the chances of it being there are pretty high)

I have been using MacOS so much that I forgot about that account :) As I will not know until Saturday that will be attempt one. Any disc images/other ideas.

heirens boot cd is required if its an admin password. very easy to use.

i used this last week. download, burn straight to disc, insert, boot from disc, follow on screen instructions to remove all passwords.

Anyone able to give me a URL to a boot disc that is public domain/freeware? OR email the image to me?

If it is Vista, you are stuffed

Make sure she has checked caps lock AND num lock are off (which is often hidden well on a laptop) Helpfully windows doesnt remind you if num lock is on, and the numbers are mapped to the normal characters on the KB

See post #5, downloading the XP boot disc and Vista/Windows 7 boot disc now :)

Apparently she has tried CAPS etc already...

Blimey, its a quick site! Downloading two CD images at 400K/s each. Still think I need a quicker connection though :)

Well as a final result.....

Just tested the VISTA/Windows7 boot disc and basically it boots to a menu with the default option being automatic recovery of password. With this selected it booted a linux OS which ran a recovery program which listed the three users on his other daughter's laptop (which I have just fixed too!) showing me the passwords for each of the three users.

So thanks to everyone especially alanwjones

That should mean that when they come round I can spent time playing with my cameras rather than her laptop :)

Glad to have been able to help
