Hi all not sure whether I should put this in here or the bird/wild and free section but my interest in wildlife and bird photography is growing fast :) I have the right camera gear now just thinking about some camo type clothing and learning more stalking skills, so any advice would be greatly received by all. Ive seen the Jack Pyke stuff and all the locals seem to wear that at the moment up stalking the rutting stags with their bino's is this the gear to get or is that more a gimmick make and others better value ? it will be more for Exmoor area which can get cold if not moving around and very damp ground.
 
I'm a big fan of army surplus gear. It's not the lightest\latest tech, but it's durable, reliable gear. For a warm under\outer layer, check out the British army reversible softie, my single favourite piece of kit ever.

Keep in mind that what you wear is only a small part of why things are seen. Shape, silhouette, sound, movement, spacing, texture, shadow are all reasons things are seen.
 
Back in my cadets days they used to teach us about smell too, going out stinking of Lynx Africa is going to give the game away :lol:

Could you tell me which one please I see there are a few, there is a 3 in 1 and a general version which is much cheaper too ?
 
Another fan of Army Surplus gear, cheap as chips, and designed exactly for the job in hand, the jackets generally have loads of pockets too, handy if you want to travel light/without a backpack on

I've got a couple of different weight MTP camo jackets (light and medium duty) and i think they are great

Adding in a Shemagh is handy too, as is knowing how to tie it in different ways ;)
 
Definitely surplus unless you have money to burn. I went with German army flecktarn stuff. It's a good match to UK woodland, and the sizing worked well for me- not least because they do a lot of different size and shape options. I found the UK stuff was fitted for short armed barrel chested types- and I'm the opposite.
I picked up a shirt, coat and waterproof for under £40- all pretty much mint. My one extravagance was a new beanie hat which was about £12.

Now you mention it, i too had a similar problem with the barrel chested, short arm syndrome, luckily my local Army Surpluss guy explained the whole measurement system to me (which is confusing to say the least) and managed to source me some perfect fitting jackets

Will certainly have a look ar the German army stuff as my MTP is great for up on the Moorland chasing Stags, but could do with some more woodland specific stuff, cheers

I always use real tree when I'm shooting TBH.
Warm, breathable, water proof ( reasonably) and not as expensive as it used to be either looking at flea bay.
Mossy Oak is similar and both have a variety of patterns.

as mentioned flecktarn is great in the uk all year round and if you buy used from the flecktarn store its hurt cheap.

If you want to go bit further look at the jack pike llcd suits, though u can get chinese copy of eBay a lot cheaper.
 
Get the best you can afford. Waterproof & breathable preferably.
Get a coat/jacket that is plenty big enough, so you can add extra clothing/fleece under it when it gets colder.

Take a look at the Stealth Gear trousers. Tough, waterproof & very warm.

I had that problem with two Jack Pyke jackets. In heavy rain the water came in at the seams in under an hour.
I have had a Paramo (Halcon) for 6 years. Waterproofing and condensation control is absolutely first rate. Downside is the tailoring which appears to be designed around the shape of a potato sack. The internal material is silky smooth which is OK as long as I don't walk with the jacket open since it tends to slide off my (broad) shoulders. If later Paramos have sorted out the tailoring then I would happily have one.
 
Thanks again for more info the stealth gear trousers sound good especially if waterproof and reinforced knees and bum are? That's ideal for up on moors as if kneeling or sitting water seems to soak through even my folding foam seat / kneel pad
 
What Army surplus suppliers are folk on here using, please.

I've also got a Paramo which I've had for a number of years. Not the most stylish (and it doesn't come in camo) but very breathable. Ive resisted the trousers though because of the way Paramo works which means if you kneel in a puddle the water will come through. I went with some Deerhunter Ram trousers which are very warm and waterproof although a little on the heavy side. They have some nice touches such as the back is shaper higher than the front so no nasty drafts around the bottom of your back. I think you need to also consider if you want an item of clothing that is intrisically warm on its own or whether you prefer to layer up. How hot you run will also be a factor

Yes it happened in Finland, wasn't overly impressed..! I haven't got the Halcon yet, I've asked for it for Christmas. ha.. I have the new Bentu fleece and shell jacket 2 piece, and so far I'm very impressed. I don't think it would be warm enough for sitting around on the top of the highlands..

For trousers you want to be looking at Fjallraven, probably the best out there maybe, or have a look at Keela Munro stuff..
 
Depends on your budget. Harkila stuff is excellent (5 yr guarantee), but pricey!
 
i have the previous year design of stealth gear trousers and they are pretty darn good, and warm, the sizing of atleast the old ones is acurate, BUT everything else is inacurate so measure yourself first

i do have a blue pair spare which will suit a slim person, 30" waist or so in your everyday clothes, so if anyone wants em poke me and ill put them up on classifieds

and the kneepads are great :)

I've just purchased this set as an all year setup. If it's not warm enough in winter then I'm going to add another layer. It's so light that it can just be squashed into the camera bag. Going to test it out this week in the lakes.

Adam,realtree camo patterns probably hardwoods green(jees I think it's that one,it might be hardwoods brown) leastways for woodland. I'm going to steer you to a company in Canada,bought here through Garlands,they are a shooting ground and the gear I ware is probably built for folks that shoot game. I figured simply if it can keep Canadain folks warm I'll be ok here in blighty. The company is Sportschief. I and my lass both have incarnates of the Aquatex clothing.

Buddy, for us as togs,guys that sit still for hours,move slow get bloody sodden this is great gear.....go running around in summer and you'll die man of heat stroke. In the floods a few years back I worked the whole day of the deluge out in it with Shaz cleaning out duck ponds,would you believe,lol,We had a journey from hell home and walked in with dry other than cuffs coat would have been 5 7 years old then.

The problem is I don't know whether sportchief make the gear I ware now which still keeps us warm and dry,somewhere around 10 to 12 years after we bought the gear. Adam My coat cost £225 back then,this was not cheep gear leggings £125. Frankly I had just got fed up with buying a coat and it failing That was a lot of dosh back then and frankly is now,So for £350 I've been warm and dry for 35 quid a year. Last time I looked at garlands the sportchief gear looked price wise cheeper,I don't know what this means mate,might be technology is improved and the gear is cheeper to make,might not be the same product? But to buy some thing silent to ware that still performs after being torn through hedges for this long is some testimonie it's fact bro,It one wants to spend alot of time out doors save and get something that just simply works,no jogging mind:D

I read some of this mate and thought straight away how out of touch I am, I've never heard of jack pike,but I guess that says something that one buys a waterproof breathable coat all those years back( I actually think it's longer for mine maybe about right for Shaz's) and the only reason I have thought about a new coat,was the advances in camo patterns from when I bought mine. Sure it's worn but it still hasn't let me down and she's been given some grief too.
