Wireless router settings question.

Not long installed a new router which is a D-Link model. It was basicly a plug and go job and all is working fine. Looking at the ISP page as admin I can view the other Pc`s in the house and anything else that is connected to it via wireless, my question. Is there a way I can control if another PC in the house can connect to the internet or not? I know you can get monitoring software etc but thought there might be a way I can block it or unblock it as I wish :shrug: I thought I might have been able to do it through security settings but I cannot seem to see anything on that subject.
 
Which D-link is it? I'd have to look at the manual, but that should be on line. My Linksys can block access - it's a fairly common request.

Hi Andy, it is a 2680 ADSL2 model.

I have had a quick look on the info about that in the meantime Neil and it seems it might be what I need, but wanted to make sure I did not mess anything else up in the process :D Tbh I need to do it to teach the 19yr old stepson a little bit of a lesson, yeh I know ;) who has been a bit chopsy of late and seems to think that what he thinks and says is how it should be in the house. Well I got other ideas about that. Will his PC not keep putting out a different IP adress though if I was to block it to start with :shrug:

if you block his MAC address it wont matter what IP he is on (MAC address is like the signature of the network card) :)

Looking at that, the only way you can configure the system is to deny access to the router (assuming Wifi connectivity). P51 shows the MAC filter. You need to find out his Mac address (easiest is to snoop and look on P61 when you know he is connected) and then enter that into a deny rule in the mac filter on P51. It isn't clear if it takes immediate effect, but a bit of trial and error should help.

Also, set a different password on the router if he's anything like computer literate....
 
PS. my router has the ability to allow/deny access to certain IP address/MAC addresses at different times. If you want to do that automatically (e.g. to turn off the internet on his computer at 10pm on weekdays automatically) you will need a different router with that feature enabled.

well I have entred three different Mac address`s one at a time in the correct box and set it to Deny, and when I click accept settings it just reverts back to 00:00:00:00:00:00 :thinking:
 
I use a D link router as my secondary wireless access point and found the control interface less clear than it could be so don't blame yourself :)

looking at the linked manual above it says you have to click the activated button at the top above the addresses and choose the 'action' before entering the mac addresses. Did you do that?

Yup! as per instructions Robert. I tried D-Link support but as it is a unit supplied by TalkTalk, guess what :D No support. I will give TT a call tomorrow and see if they can tell me what the issue might be. Cheers for the reply though :thumbs:
 
If you have access to his computer type ipconfig /all and this will show his Mac address. Also make sure your admin page of your router doesn't have the default password or he might work this out.
