Yes
Received a call tonight congratulating me on winning a cruise and all I had to do to claim it was to press 9 on the keypad, had enough of cruising so did not claim it:D

Oh! you are so tight Mal, could have put it up as a freeby for us poor sods:D:D:D

Seriously though, am I correct in saying that as soon as the 9 key is hit you are charged at a mega premium rate:eek:

i would imagine you're spot on mal.

On a similar note,

I'm sick of all of the automated calls I seem to get - despite being ex-directory and having only had the number (new number when we moved house) for 2 months.

I know I haven't given it to anyone but family and the energy suppliers etc so someone has obviously sold it on - or I'm just unlucky they guessed my number :shake:

Automated calls are just chance. We get calls now and then on the phone at work. It's an internal phone but does receive incoming calls. Only people that work their will know the number so the calls we get offering debt solutions are purely by chance.

AndrewA123 your number belonged to someone else before you got it and probably wasn't ex-d then.

Yeah I'm guessing thats probably it, although as mentioned previously the "Random Number Process" does occur too.

We requested a new number when we moved in, so that we prevented any calls for previous owner, but I guess all numbers are simply recycled.

Andrew - Some automated systems use call dialers which basically go through every permiatation of numbers eg. 123,124,125,126. They keep going until someone answers unfortunately.

Galaxy - you could put your free cruise into the pot with the MILLIONS i have been promised from Prince UjiBuji of Guana, and we could have a big raffle. Add to this the 100 emails a week i get for cheapy Viagra, and free Microsoft Software, i reckon we could make a killing (y)

About a year ago, a lot of people here in Denmark were called up by "santa" just around christmas telling people that they had won some big prize. This was off cause a big scam. But the beauty of it all was the fact that this call was made from somewhere in the caribian and those calling could not hang up the phone so the only way to terminate the call was if the person they called hung up. Obviously they were being charged for the call since they were the ones calling you. One day "santa" called me. What did I do? put my phone on the table and let them stay on the line for a few hours until they had cursed me for not hanging up about 20 times. Imagine the phonebill they would receive for calling me. There is no such thing as scamming a scammer.(y)

TPS is your friend.

Takes 28 days before it kicks in, but after that you are not allowed to be cold called. The beauty with automated calls is that you get the company details to report them ;)

Mmm it is more than 28 days since I added my number, time to take details of all callers as we had a few for kitchens last week saying we had been specially selected for a 50% discount, to think some plonkas out there believe all that rubbish:LOL:

Yep, you are entitled to submit a complaint after the 28 day registration period.

I've found a good way of avoiding a lot of calls is not to speak when you answer the phone - if its a mate or family they'll say hello first and you might look a plonker but they'll understand :) but if you don't speak a lot of the calls will terminate before you have to spend 5 minutes of your life explaining to some pleb that you don't want a new mobile phone contract!

We have found telephone preference service to work very well, been on for a couple of year, also ex directory helps, also fps (fax preference service) works well, even do a mail preference service thats stops all junk mail, that don't work as well as its up to the local sort office to block junk mail, and we don't get a regular postie.

I agree, it works well for me.

There are several ways to deal with unsolicited calls if there is a human on the other end, then shout ans swear at them calling them all the derogatory name you can think of as you'll then go on their screamers list and they tend to keep away then ( I think one woman got upset when my dad slagged her off )

Also you can go to get the "Householder" and then just go about you day and leave them waiting, it's their money that pays for the call not yours.

Personally I never even speak to them and just hang-up, I also shut the door in the face of people who knock at my door.

I also subscribe to the telephone preference service, and the one for junk mail too. I've also been known to just put the handset on the desk for 20 minutes or so too...

But the best answer I've EVER heard of is this one LINK
No... I'm pretty sure it's not real but it's certainly funny :)

cheers

I also use TPS, and haven't been cold called by a UK company. Not all that long ago, we used to get regular phone calls from some company in India trying to sell us mortgages, but TPS doesn't work against them, and there was nothing BT could do either. I even ended up raising the matter with my local MP, who made enquiries on my behalf (and did a very good job of it). BT told us to just answer the call, then leave the phone on the table - just like you guys have been doing above. It carried on for a couple of weeks after that, but I haven't been called by them for nearly a year now.

I couldn't wait for Mal to put up the details so i tried it for myself. I picked up the phone and pressed "9"

Nothing happened so I pressed "9" again

Still nothing happened so I tried pressing "9" one last time.

This time it worked and a nice lady answered the phone so I asked her about my free cruise. She got quite upset and insisted that I made a choice between Police, Ambulance or fire.

Having some considerations for my wife’s penchant for men in uniform, I thought that the Fireman cruise would be fun for her so I asked the lady for that one. I was put through to the Fireman cruise department and another nice lady asked me for my address so the tickets could be delivered.

What stunning service, a bunch of men wearing Firemen uniforms turned up at our house within 10 minutes ..... but the silly sausages had forgotten the tickets! How I laughed, they got the hoses out and everything, they made it a very realistic and somewhat exciting experience. The head Fireman was a bit stroppy though, he got a bit annoyed at forgetting the tickets and started shouting at me about it all being a waste of time and told me that he was going to tell the Police cruise people about it all. Apparently the Police cruise people will visit us later today.

I'll keep you updated

Also we get quite a few of cold callers at the door, fascias, conservatories, can we do your drive, that sort of thing, I always tell them I'm not the owner, I just rent the place..........it's not true but they don't hang around long:naughty:

I only get random calls at work now, so have to make them as fun as I can, I work for a large department store and some donut called trying to sell me a kitchen, we have a showroom full of them. He obviously did not here the company name as I answered and I had fun!

theres also the "hang on a minute......." put on silent and see how long they hold! :D

My dad is a bit of a mug for stuff like this, if he had any money i'm sure he'd have sent it to Nigeria by now in the vain hope of getting a million quid held in some dormant dictators account.

he told me he got a letter saying he'd won one of a number of prizes, all he had to do was ring this number so he did :wacky:

a few days later he got his prize, a skiing holiday, he's 75 and almost housebound.:bonk:

Then he wonders how he gets so much junk mail.

TPS hasn't made to me. The main problem with it is that they charge a fortune for the databases so apart from large corporates noone is going to buy the DB. I know this from experience.
