Not having done this for ten years I can't remember how but...

I want to create a document in word which consists mainly of text. I need the text to contain fields which are selectable as drop downs and might contain maybe 3-35 possible answers.

ALSO I need the answer of one drop down to populate the document in several other locations.

eg.

My name is Darren I went to the house on 13/5/90 and when I was there on 13/5/90 I went in a car. The car was red in colour and i'm called Darren.

In the above example the RED fields would be editable as text and the BLUE ones would be dependant on the corresponding RED field. The green field would be editable text and the RED field would be dependant on the GREEN field

Having not done this for a while...... would it be better if this was completed in Excel ?

You can use :

Data >>> Validation > List (to create a pick list)

Then conditional formatting to choose the colours ?

Or you can use various farmulae to lookup values in a table and give the desired result?

The colours are only for the description above, all the text is in black and it has to be word, it is for work and I am trying to save myself lots of time by creating the same document with certain words changed like dates and references.

I'm not a word man... but I would imagine this feature is within Forms ?

I've had a quick look and drop down is mentioned there.....

But how you create them.... I don't know

I can create a field easily enough which just sits there and you can change the contents ie the GREEN bit but I do not know how to give this field a name and then re-insert it elsewhere. I know you can as I used to do this years ago.

Hello Darren,

I used to do something similar by using the insert "Autotext" function - from this you can easily create your own lists and sub-lists to automatically insert text into a document.

But to then populate the same text throughout involves more preparation as you have to Create "Field codes" in the document much as you would for a mail merge - I normally have to resort using the manual or looking at online tutorials as it's not second nature to me.......

Here is a link to one such tutorial which will do what I believe you want. Click here.

regards

Roy
