Wordpress static site and blog?

My current static site is Flash and I'm working to get rid of it due to all the obvious reasons.

I currently use a Prophoto template blog and it's proven to be brilliant for what I needed for a blog (and more).

I've been building a static site to match the blog (using prophoto) and it's only just occurred to me that rather than having a static site and a blog site, I could now incorporate my blog into what I was designing as a purely static site.

The question is (finally) what are the advantages of combining them? would I be better keeping 2 seperate sites - There'll be no landing page, my plan is for them to be linked in the menu. My feeling is that the blog is currently responsible for most of my search traffic and I don't want to wreck my rankings either by duplication of content or by throwing away all the hard work I've already done.
 
You could do it all through WP, as it can have static pages.
 
I know I can do it all with one WP site, as per my post I've already built the static site as a prophoto template within WP.

The question is: What are the advantages of combining them in WP and are there disadvantages with losing all the SEO I've built up on my current blog?
 
I did read this after you posted, and didn't really understand it - hence not replying.

Just had a nose at Prophoto, and it looks like a really expensive theme for Wordpress.

My understanding:

You have a static (flash) site.
You have a Wordpress site with a Prophoto template (your blog)

You are building another site with a customised Prophoto theme.

You want to know whether you can/should incorporate your template site into your customised site? Is that right?

If so - it would depend on your urls.

How do they all relate? is your flash site your main url (e.g. abc.com), with your blog as a subdirectory within it (e.g. abc.com/blog) or does it have its own url? How does your customised site relate to it?

The bottom line, is that if the same content appears under a different url, I would imagine google would penalise it as duplicate content. If your customised site is going to have the same url, I would imagine there'd be no difference as long as you don't have that duplicate content running at the same time.

Wordpress is fairly customisable in terms of renaming pages and posts, but I have no clue what the Prophoto front end looks like. I'm guessing it's just a big complicated theme, and you still have basic Wordpress functionality.

It could help your SEO to have two separate sites as they'd be cross linking to each other.

I would have thought that it's probably quite important to keep your existing blog URL and content for SEO reasons, but I don't see why you can't add static pages to that blog without damaging anything... but I'm no expert!

Thanks, yes prophoto is 'just an expensive theme for wordpress' but it does a great job of all the things that a photographer needs in one easy to use package, and is so customisable that you could look at 20 sites built in it and they'd all look different, not just colour schemes but it offers total layout flexibility.

What I love about it:
  • gallery uploads
  • flash galleries that automatically dumb-down for smartphones
  • backup
  • hands free seo

My current site is using a .co.uk url with the blog at .co.uk/blog

I'm not contemplating duplicating any content, I'm planning to link as little as possible to have everything I need. So I think I'll carry on with my current plans.
 
I think that'll be fine then. if everything is under the "yourcurrentsite.co.uk" umbrella, just moving the links around wouldn't affect your search engine rankings for your blog content.

The only problems I could see would be if you changed your main url to "yournewsite.co.uk" for example. Effectively a new website as far as googlebots would be concerned, and would need re-indexing. You could potentially get around that even with a simple redirect of the new url to your existing urlname.

Oh - and I didn't mean to belittle Prophoto. I was just trying to simplify it for my peanut brain :)

Thanks Ian, I never took it as an insult to prophoto, horses for courses when it comes to templates. :)

I didn't want to spend loads of time tweaking wordpress when they've already done all I need.

It's expensive for a 'template' but compared to my time it's cheap as chips.:thumbs:
