Hi Everyone

I am not sure if i have put this thread in the right place or if i am even allowed to ask what i am going to ask but i am sure it will be removed if i am not!

Well here i go, I have completed two courses now in photography one a beginners and the other a next steps course at my local adult education centre which i finished today. I have a real passion for photography. I just need some help. I would like to have some hands on experience.

I would love to work alongside a professional photography once a week for how ever many hours they can spare for me. To help me develop and teach me all they know. In the Kent area, Sittingbourne if possible or near here.

If anyone could be my mentor i would be so grateful for a opportunity.

Thank you for reading.

Ps: I do not want paying any money , i just want to learn!

Hi Kate
Why not join something like the SWPP and you can submit images and get mentoring? THis question does come up now and again and it's not often that a pro will teach someone to be their competition.

You can ask around your area, actually contact photographers directly and show them some of your images so they know what level you are at and offer to assist them just to get some experience, you can get lucky and find people who will help you out but asking for them to teach you what they know probably isn't a good approach starting out.

It also depends what type of photography you are trying to get into. Everyone with a camera is shooting weddings and portraits and often doing it for free these days. A wedding tog might be reluctant to train you as competition in todays environment. In fact many are running workshops so at least they generate some income teaching all the people that want to be photographers.

You have to be patient and very committed to make it as a photographer these days and a little bit of luck won't go astray either. If you really want to work with a pro then finding one well out of your area might be easier as they won't see you as direct competition quite as much. Also a good pro tog who is well established is probably more likely to mentor someone, but a lot of them are tired of people with a little bit of knowledge trying to undercut them. The problem is photography is one of those things that people will often do for free even though its costing them time and money. You don't see people offering to wash dishes in a restaurant so they can get experience to open their own restaurant next door and start giving away the food. You can see the problem.

Eventually the free restaurant owner will have to start charging realistic prices or go broke, but by then 10 more people have started their own free restaurants.

I'm not trying to put you off, you are doing the right thing asking, just know that it can be a hard slog and you have to be prepared to keep picking yourself up and moving forward.

Thanks for your comments to the both of you. i do understand. I just want to learn with someone. but i do agree with all what your saying.

Lucky being the operative word - but that "lucky" may not be so depending on the level of person you ask.[/quote

Get yourself out there and shoot as much as you can. If you have skill you will be noticed and people will talk about you. Get a facebook page and use it as a blog. Create interest and try and get some models to do some TFP work (time for prints).

Study images you like and what you like about them then when creating your own you can put your own slant on these.

good luck

Try and get together with a group of other local 'toggers. It doesn't have to be a formal group, just a few people you can call on when you want a shoot or a day out. You'll learn from each other and be tempted to try things outside your normal comfort zone. From experience, a small group (half-a-dozen or so) with mixed interests that get to know each other well will be a better group than twenty or thirty occasionals. Keep it fun, keep it social and set each other challenges. Share your images with each other (set up a Flickr group) and be very open about offering/accepting comments and criticism.

Used to develop my own film in a dark room!, still have the photos to this day. There not brillant! Thank you for the offer of learning that but i am more into digital now. ;) Do you go to camera clubs now? What type of photography to you do ?

It would be good if i said what type of photography i like well i like portraiture, baby photography, Child photography, Family photography, and pets. Also like other photography as well such as Wildlife, Flowers, Street, Landscapes. Anything really i have not found a dislike. ;)

If it is the Bluebell meet I will not be able to make that one:(

Thank you very much for offering a lift

Yeah would like to go to some meets in the future maybe but i am abit nervous ;)

There's no need to be nervous about going to a meet. We're a fairly harmless bunch and don't bite very often. It's a good way of learning new techniques and improving your photography. It's also a good laugh and you can generally get a picture of one of us in a very undignified pose.
