Yes
I would like to try my hand at taking some product type shots like you see in magazines with the white backgrounds. Can anyone point me to a good tutorial and can I do it without flash or is that a requirement for these type of shots?

Flash (at least 2) is a definite requirement for this kind of thing. Unless you want to get a light tent and waIt until around midday on a nice day when you could do it outside.

There are continuous lighting kits too, which for still life will work work ok.

Start reading strobist.com now before you start buying :)

You'll realise that you don't want/need (overly) expensive flash guns for this kind of thing, TTL is almost certainly going to be a waste, for product/still-life I wouldn't even bother with wireless flash remotes, just PC/3.5mm cords (I prefer 3.5mm as it makes it possible to home-craft your sync cables).
